New movies in theaters – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and more

A powerful group of mutants charged the box office last weekend in X-Men: Apocalypse, but another gaggle of non-humans is poised to challenge them for the top spot this weekend.

With Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Raphael, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Donatello aim to slide into victory at the box office. They won’t get there easily, as the Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin drama Me Before You is also releasing (and triggering tears from audience members).

There’s the comedy Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, which positions Andy Samberg as a rapper and is bursting with celebrity cameos, plus the thriller Into the Forest with Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood. Getting limited release are the comedies The Steps and Chevalier, the documentary I Am the Blues and the drama The Waiting Room. ~Matthew Pariselli

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — brothers Raphael (Alan Ritchson), Michelangelo (Noel Fisher), Leonardo (Pete Ploszek) and Donatello (Jeremy Howard) — return to save New York City from a new threat in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, which launches onto screens today. April O’Neil (Megan Fox) is joined again by Vernon Fenwick (Will Arnett) and this time around, a goalie-masked, hockey stick-wielding vigilante named Casey Jones (Stephen Amell) as they team up with the turtles to combat purple ooze, which turns humans into animals. Click here for showtimes.

In Me Before You, Lou (Emilia Clarke) is a simple, small town girl hopping from job to job. Will (Sam Claflin) is a wealthy businessman who becomes confined to a wheelchair after an accident. These two very different people from very different worlds meet when Will decides life isn’t worth living and Lou becomes his caregiver. After a challenging start, their diverse circumstances impact each other in ways they could have never imagined. Based on Jojo Moyes’ bestselling novel Me Before You, the film opens nationwide today. As Conner says, “It takes a village to make me look dope.” However, he faces a crisis of popularity after his sophomore album flops, leaving his fans, sycophants and rivals all wondering what to do when he’s no longer the dopest star of all. Into the Forest, opening across Canada today, takes place in the near future as a massive power outage darkens North America. Sisters Nell (Ellen Page) and Eva (Evan Rachel Wood) live in a house in a forest far from the nearest town with their father Robert (Callum Keith Rennie). They’re more alone now than they’ve ever felt before. As the blackout drags on and their supplies dwindle, the sisters battle starvation, sickness and trespassers. With a possible apocalypse looming, they’ll have to rely on their wits to see them through. Click here for showtimes.

Uptight New Yorker Jeff (Jason Ritter) has just lost his job. When he and his sister Marla (Emmanuelle Chriqui) are invited for a visit to their dad’s (James Brolin) new lake house in Canada, it’s a welcome diversion, until they realize they’re going to have to spend time with his new cocktail waitress wife (Christine Lahti) and her three adult sons. They also discover they’ve been invited for a specific reason. Their father and his new wife want to adopt a little Chinese girl, and would like their real kids to pretend to be a loving family by Monday, when a social worker is coming to interview the prospective family. Naturally, Jeff and Marla are less than thrilled by the prospect. The Steps opens today in Toronto, Halifax, Edmonton and Calgary. Click here for showtimes.

On a luxury yacht in the Aegean Sea, six male acquaintances of various ages decide to play a game that consists of a rigorous series of personal and physical challenges to determine which of them is “the best in general.” The winner of this masculinity test will win a reward — a victory ring know as the Chevalier, to be worn on the little finger. The men throw themselves into the competition with gusto, in which they have a variety of tests including measurements, a sing-off, a cleaning test, and a call home to see who gets the most love. The documentary I Am the Blues opens today in Toronto and tomorrow in Winnipeg.. It takes audiences on a journey from juke joints to church halls, mountains and the bayou as well as on the back roads with blues legends such as Bobby Rush, Barbara Lynn, Henry Gray, Carol Fran, Lazy Lester, Little Freddie King, Bilbo Walker, RL Boyce, Jimmy “Duck” Holmes, Lil’ Buck Sinegal and LC Ulmer. Filmmaker Daniel Cross visits these last original blues artists, many of whom are now octogenarians, still living in the southern states and still touring with their music. Click here for showtimes.
