Creed movie imageThe days may be getting shorter, but there’s always time to catch a movie or two over the weekend. If you’ve been missing Rocky Balboa, he is back and in business as a trainer in the movie Creed.

If sports aren’t your thing, there are dramas opening this weekend to choose from: Trumbo or James White. And you could call Victor Frankenstein a drama as well, but you might also want to call it a thriller.

Don’t worry. We’ve got the kids covered too. For them and the kid in all of us, The Good Dinosaur is now playing. Don’t forget the popcorn! ~ Sharon Salsberg

If you are a fan of underdog type sports movies then Creed is a must. Adonis Johnson, son of Apollo Creed (one time boxing foe but longtime friend of champion Rocky Balboa), asks the retired Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) to train him. His father died before he was born, but he has boxing in his blood. Now he has a daunting challenger in the ring. Rocky, recognizing Apollo in Adonis, agrees. Does he have the heart of a boxer like the generation that came before him? Creed opened across Canada on Wednesday. Click here for showtimes, and here for our interview with Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson and director Ryan Coogler.

We always ask ourselves what if? In the case of the wide release The Good Dinosaur, the what if question is a doozy. What if an asteroid hadn’t hit Earth and wiped out the dinosaurs? Find out the answer in this animated 3D family flick, which tells the tale of Arlo, a young Apatosaurus who becomes separated from his parents and siblings and meets a caveboy named Spot. Together, they embark on an adventure to return Arlo home. Click here for showtimes, and here for our interview with Raymond Ochoa, the child actor who provides the voice of Arlo.

Scientist Victor Frankenstein (James McAvoy) makes a new friend in surgeon Igor Strausman (Daniel Radcliffe) when they meet at a London circus. The scientist is looking for animal body parts. He researches chemical processes and how a body decomposes in order to learn how to recreate life. The men begin to work together to change the world, but the experiments in their lab to do not go as planned. Now playing across Canada; click here for showtimes.

Introduced at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, Trumbo is a biographical drama based on the book Dalton Trumbo by Bruce Cook. It takes you back to 1947, when Hollywood writers and actors were blacklisted for their political beliefs. The main character is Dalton Trumbo (Bryan Cranston), a screenwriter enjoying a successful career. When he refuses to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee, he gets blacklisted. No matter, he continued writing and won two Academy Awards under a pseudonym. The great cast includes Diane Lane, Elle Fanning, John Goodman and Helen Mirren. Opening in select cities — click here for showtimes and here to watch our interviews with Bryan Cranston, David Maldonado and director Jay Roach.

In this coming-of-age story, a 20-something James White (Christopher Abbott) struggles to wrest control of his own life from his recklessness while encountering challenges including a seriously ill mother and other pressures with the backdrop of a wild New York City. He must find the strength to carry on or chaos will result. Click here for showtimes in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa.
