Michael Bay’s new film Pain & Gain pummeled Oblivion out of the top spot at the box office this weekend. The muscle-man crime film opened with a strong $20 million but has a weak Tribute user rating of 2.8/5 stars while Tom Cruise’s sci-fi flick nabbed $17.4 million and has a rating of 3.6 stars. The baseball biopic, 42, held strong at third place with an impressive rating of 4.5 stars and has so far brought in $69.1 million in North America. The other movie opening across the continent over the weekend, The Big Wedding, didn’t fare as well as its muscle-happy competition. It has a Tribute rating of 3.5 stars and earned only $7.5 million in its first three days despite its stellar cast, including Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon, Katherine Heigl, and Amanda Seyfried. Meanwhile, The Croods continued to stay in the top five with an additional $6.6 million, a Tribute user rating of 4.5 stars and an impressive worldwide tally of $471 million.
Rounding out the box office top ten were G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Scary Movie 5, Olympus Has Fallen, The Place Beyond the Pines, and Jurassic Park 3D. Overall, the box office is still weaker this year than at the same time last year. That will hopefully change with Iron Man 3, which opens later this week. It had an impressive debut overseas with $195.3 million. ~Cassie Jasinski
