Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones Blu-ray review

As a fan of the original Paranormal Activity, which made its debut in 2009, I knew exactly what I was getting myself into when I popped in this latest one, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, a spin-off of the franchise. Sequels Paranormal Activity 2, 3 and 4 kept getting more and more intense each time and with this one I knew there would be more demonic activity, more attacks and more jump-out-of-your seat moments. In this chapter of the saga we are introduced to high school graduate Jesse, who lives with his father and grandmother. Their basement neighbor Anna, believed to be a witch, is found dead and Jesse’s classmate Oscar is accused of the crime. Jesse and his friend Hector decide to investigate the basement apartment, discovering black magic rituals, a picture of Jesse and VHS tapes from Katie and Kristi’s childhood. He also discovers a book of spells discussing doorways that can take people back in time and into evil and unholy places. When he wakes up with a bite mark on his arm, strange things begin to happen to Jesse, such as knocking out a bunch of thugs with an unseen force, which leads him to believe he has superhuman powers. Jesse begins to change dramatically, becoming dark and violent.
This film literally had me completely engrossed in the storyline. It is a good middle point between the fourth movie and the soon-to-be released fifth installment. The home video shooting aspect still plays an important role in this film, but it’s done with more expertise than in earlier films.
For avid watchers who have seen the other installments, you will enjoy this film. If you haven’t watched the last four films I strongly recommend you watch them or at least look them up because you may not understand some of the important references. Bonus features on the Blu-ray include a new extended cut with 15 minutes of extra footage not seen in theaters. Overall it is fairly predictable of what you can expect in any Paranormal Activity film. It’s a nice little break from the whole Katie/Kristi story but still plays in to the whole scheme of things. ~Tarah Bleier
