Pinewood Toronto Studios has been the shooting spot for several big blockbusters over the past year, including The Vow starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum, David Cronenberg‘s Cosmopolis starring Robert Pattinson and the recent remake of Total Recall with Colin Farrell and Kate Beckinsale. The studio — which also has filming locations in the U.K., Dominican Republic, Germany and Malaysia — will now be expanding their Toronto location, just outside the main downtown core in the Portlands area, by building three new state-of-the-art sound stages measuring an impressive 10,800 square feet each. They’ll also be adding 100,000 square feet of additional office space that longer-term tenants can use for other levels of production, from design to finance. “This expansion builds on the amazing success Pinewood Toronto Studios has enjoyed since opening in 2008,” said Blake Steels, president of Pinewood Toronto Studios, at the groundbreaking ceremony yesterday. “We’ve attracted Canadian and international film and television productions along with big name Hollywood blockbusters. The new sound stages mean more availability of high quality production space.” City councillors Paula Fletcher and Michael Thompson were also on hand to celebrate the expansion project. Pinewood Toronto Studios is already buzzing with their latest productions, the remake of RoboCop and Guillermo del Toro‘s sci-fi action flick Pacific Rim, both expected in theaters next year.
