Releasing today: American Ultra, Sinister 2 and more

American UltraWant to watch movies instead of preparing for back-to-school season? Take a look at what’s heading to theatres this weekend, including American Ultrawhich will challenge Straight Outta Compton for top spot at the box office. Also opening everywhere this weekend is horror sequel Sinister 2  and the action flick Hitman: Agent 47.

American Ultra opens in wide release today. Mike Howell (Jesse Eisenberg) is a typical stoner who lives in a small town with his girlfriend, Phoebe (Kristen Stewart). A retired secret agent, Mike must deal with his past when it catches up with him to save his life and Phoebe’s as well. Click here for showtimes.

Also in wide release as of today is Sinister 2Shortly after a young mother and her two sons move into a new house, weird things start happening. They find out they are being haunted and attacked by ghosts who threaten to kill the boys and film it so the spirits can watch the murders over and over again. Click here for showtimes.

Hitman: Agent 47 is another wide release opening today. It’s a reboot of the film franchise based on the hit video game. Agent 47 (Rupert Friend) is an elite assassin who was engineered to be the world’s greatest killing machine. When an evil crime organization attempts to recreate the process so they can create an army of trained killers, it is up to 47 to stop them and save the world. Click here for showtimes.

Also opening this weekend are a number of limited-release films. Opening in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, Fort Tilden follows two young women, Allie (Clare McNulty) and Harper (Bridey Elliott), who are struggling to find their way through life. When they meet two young men who invite them to spend the day at the beach, they quickly realize that, just like their confusing, transitioning lives, they’re not sure of where they’re going or how to get there. Playing in Toronto and Montreal, How to Make Love Like an Englishman is the story of poetry professor Richard Haig (Pierce Brosnan) and his fling with a student, Kate (Jessica Alba). When she becomes pregnant, the two get together. After a few years his continued immaturity forces Kate to leave him. Shortly after, he gets a DUI and is inspired to change his life and finally grow up. When Kate has her sister Olivia (Salma Hayek) come take care of her son, feelings begin to blossom between Richard and Olivia. Click here for showtimes.

Opening in Toronto only is Mistress America, the story of Tracy (Lola Kirke)  who moves to NYC in search of a glamorous metropolitan lifestyle. When she finds herself dissatisfied with her situation, her soon-to-be stepsister Brooke (Greta Gerwig) arrives and the two go on wild adventures in the city. Click here for showtimes.

Playing in Toronto only and opening on September 4 in Vancouver, Calgary, VOD and iTunes, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was a pioneer and a visionary. He helped design and create the concepts and practices that evolved the personal computer into what it is today. Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine, opening in Toronto onlyis a documentary from Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney that profiles the original Mac creator’s genius but examines his tyrant side as well. People close to Steve also discuss their experiences with one of the most recognizable icons of the 21st century. Click here for showtimes.

And finally, also playing in Toronto only, The Amina Profile is a documentary based on a blog titled A Gay Girl in Damascus. It details the life of a woman, Amina Arraf, who begins a romantic relationship online with French-Canadian Sandra Bagaria. When an update from Amina’s cousin is posted on the blog, reporting that Amina has been kidnapped, Sandra begins a search that leads her to discover Amina was not who she said she was. Click here for showtimes.
