Seth MacFarlane – good or terrible Oscar host?

By Tribute on February 25, 2013 | 12 Comments

First time host Seth MacFarlane didn’t quite live up to expectations at last night’s Oscars. The audience gasped when he joked about Rihanna and Chris Brown, and didn’t find it funny when he put down French actor Jean Dujardin, who was last year’s best actor winner. William Shatner made an appearance via video screen, asking him “Why can’t Tina Fey & Amy Poehler host everything?” There were moments where MacFarlane was poised and charming and his singing was definitely above average, but social media responded harshly to his 17-minute long introduction, then to his overall performance as the event drew to a close. The night ended with a song from MacFarlane and Glee star Kristin Chenoweth, but by then, most had tuned out. In an interview before the ceremony, MacFarlane said he won’t ever host the Oscars again, so maybe we can’t blame the guy, because he did warn us.[poll id=”427″]

Boring, intro had its “moments” But admittedly I am biased. Billy Crystal forever…

I agree Billy Crystal is the best. I think Seth did a decent job first time out. I think the skit with Sally Field was funny. I think the Shatner skit was funny but could have been shorter. I know he was worried that these actors are there to be honoured and they have really thin skin even though they deal with Razzies and bad reviews and film flops all the time.
I think this was a decent first try and he should give it another chance.I guess it takes up a lot of his time, but it’s worth it to be a part of history.

Billy Crystal was not the best, but not as bad as James and Anne. I thought Seth did an awesome job. the theme of the sow though I thought was poorly executed as well as the bond tribute. I think critics are being a little to hard on him, as far as oscar hosts go, I think that he has been one of the best in recent years. all in all, he was awesome in my opinion.

I like the one with ‘ saw your boobs’ song. Seeing those unimpressed actors were funny. 🙂 They should lighten up. What do you expect from hardcore comedian? !

He did the job that was expected of him. The people who chose him for to host got Seth McFarlane at his best. Although I have to admit that the show seems to be taking some trashier turns these past few years. i can’t imagine the ratings are all that great.

Seth comments were too risque for that kind of audience. I did find some of his stuff funny but, when they panned to the audience I felt that they just weren’t amused.Oh well, he gave it his best shot.

What I dislike is that fact people are bitching over Seth’s risque jokes, music and skits. I mean c’mon people, what were you expecting; look at this guys resume. It’s nothing but raunchy and hilarious jokes. And whats with the appalling reactions from some the actresses, of coarse Seth will have some boob jokes and hey it’s their fault for showing them anyway. Fu*k them if they can’t take a joke.

He was hilarious. The audience just had to lighten up and should’ve known what they were getting into with the creator of Family Guy.

I think Seth did an amazing job! He can do comedy, sing( a great voice) and he can dance. I actually was excited to watch the Oscars this year, because he was the HOST! The actors/actress know the host will always
poke fun at them, its ENTERTAINMENT PEOPLE! I personally hope they NEVER bring back Billy Crystal, I find him quite annoying and not funny at all. On a side note: Did anyone think Rene Zellwieger looked drunk on stage? It looked like she was going to fall
    over…..

I completely agree with jim. When you hire the creator of Family Guy and Ted, you must have an idea of what kind of humor to expect. For my part, I found Seth did a good job. I laughed a lot during his opening, especially during the Flight parody. Overall, it was way better than last year…

@Kelly: the I saw your boobs song was prerecorded. The actresses in the audience whose reactions we saw were acting – the ones shown were all presenters, they were wearing different outfits in the “skit” and they were pretending to be offended, thinking it would be funny. I didn’t think any of the William Shatner bit was funny, although I did enjoy the jokes about Chris Brown and Mel Gibson.

I watched the intro so I can’t judge his whole performance. But I loved the musical and dance numbers with Charlize Theron + Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Daniel Radcliffe. Omg Joseph Gordon-Levitt is SUCHA CUTIE! XD
