Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book The BFG has found its Sophie. DreamWorks Studios announced today that the upcoming adaptation of the beloved story, which will be directed by Steven Spielberg, has cast newcomer Ruby Barnhill, 10, in her first feature film role as the young girl, Sophie. While discussing the casting decision Spielberg said, “After a lengthy search, I feel Roald Dahl himself would have found Ruby every bit as marvellous as we do.”
The BFG is set to join the likes of Dahl’s other adapted books, including: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda and Fantastic Mr.Fox. However, this film is set to be even more special because The BFG was Dahl’s personal favorite of his stories. The book, which was initially published in 1982, tells the story of Sophie and a mysterious Giant’s friendship as he shows her his beautiful home in the Giant Country. The BFG, which stands for “Big Friendly Giant,” will be played by The Other Boleyn Girl‘s Mark Rylance, 54.
The film will reunite screenwriter Melissa Mathison with Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy — who brought the book to DreamWorks — for the first time since the awe-inspiring E.T. The Extra- Terrestrial. Production on the film, which is sure to be another classic, will begin in early 2015 and the film is set to hit theatres on July 1, 2016. ~Janine Wyslobicky
