Stan Lee, the man who created the Mary Jane Watson character, approves of the decision to cast Zendaya as Peter Parker/Spider-Man’s (Tom Holland) love interest in the 2017 film Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The casting choice is a curious one for some fans. The 19-year-old actress is half African-American, while Mary Jane Watson has always been depicted on screen as a white woman with red hair. For Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee, Zendaya’s skin color makes no difference. “If she is as good an actress as I hear she is, I think it’ll be absolutely wonderful,” he says.
This will be Mary Jane’s first appearance in a live-action Spider-Man film since Kirsten Dunst played the role in 2007’s Spider-Man 3.
Stan Lee’s fans can catch him at this year’s Fan Expo in Toronto. The 93-year-old former president and chairman of Marvel Comics has said this will be his final Canadian appearance.
