Star Wars: The Force AwakensAlthough four new movies opened in wide release on Christmas Day, it was no surprise that Star Wars: The Force Awakens continued to top the weekend box office.

Raking in an additional $153.5 million, Star Wars: The Force Awakens broke records all week for the biggest earner on each day leading up to Christmas weekend. It has now earned over $544 million at the domestic box office in less than two weeks, and is officially the fastest film in history to reach $1 billion globally, in only 12 days.  It continues to be a favorite with Tribute.ca users, who gave it 4 stars.

The new comedy Daddy’s Home, which reunites Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg (who previously starred together in The Other Guys) as competing fathers, debuted in second place with $38.8 million, not a bad opening for a film that cost $50 million to make. Tribute.ca users gave this movie a high rating of 4.3 stars.

Joy, starring Jennifer Lawrence in a Golden Globe-nominated performance about a single mother struggling to make ends meet who comes up with an incredible idea, opened in third place with a take of $17.5 million. It received 2.5 stars at Tribute.ca.

Last weekend’s third place movie, Sisters, starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, dropped only one spot to fourth in its second weekend, earning an additional $13.9 million. Tribute.ca users gave the comedy 3.4 stars.

Rounding out the top five was Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, a favorite for families with small children. It debuted in second place last weekend, and earned an additional $12.7 million on Christmas weekend. The animated comedy received 3.9 stars at Tribute.ca.

The other two Christmas Day releases were Concussion, starring Will Smith, which opened in sixth place with $11 million, and the Point Break remake starring Luke Bracey, which opened in a disappointing eighth place with $10.2 million.
