Stephen Colbert to replace David Letterman

CBS announced today that Stephen Colbert will replace David Letterman as the host of The Late Show. Leslie Moonves, president and CEO of the network, said in a statement, “Stephen Colbert is one of the most inventive and respected forces on television… David Letterman’s legacy and accomplishments are an incredible source of pride for all of us here, and today’s announcement speaks to our commitment of upholding what he established for CBS in late night.” The premiere of the Colbert-hosted Late Show will be determined and announced after Letterman decides the date of his final broadcast. The host of Colbert Report said, “Simply being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a highlight of my career.” Colbert added, “I’m thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth.”
Colbert was at the top of the list of possible Letterman’s replacements, which also reportedly included Ellen DeGeneres, Louis C.K. and Neil Patrick Harris. Colbert has been host of The Colbert Report since 2005. The show won an Emmy for outstanding variety series in 2013 and three Emmys for writing for a variety, music or comedy program in 2008, 2010 and 2013. ~Alexandra Sharova
