Taylor Lautner confirmed for Twilight sequel

By Alexandra Heilbron on January 9, 2009 | 38 Comments

Taylor Lautner as Jacob in TwilightTaylor Lautner, who played Jacob Black in Twilight, will return to the role for the sequel New Moon. For weeks it’s been rumored that he would be replaced, because although the 16-year-old fit the role perfectly in the first movie, the character undergoes major physical changes in the follow up. Director Chris Weitz announced the news in a statement posted on Twilight author Stephanie Meyer‘s website this week, saying: “I’m very happy to announce that Taylor Lautner will be playing Jacob Black in New Moon and that he’s doing so with the enthusiastic support of Summit Entertainment, the producers, and Stephenie Meyer. The characters in Stephenie’s books go through extraordinary changes of circumstance and also appearance; so it is not surprising that there has been speculation about whether the same actor would portray a character who changes in so many surprising ways throughout the series. But it was my first instinct that Taylor was, is, and should be Jacob, and that the books would be best served by the actor who is emotionally right for the part. I think that fans of Twilight the book and the movie will be surprised by the Jacob Black that Taylor will bring to the screen in New Moon; and I’m looking forward to working with him and the rest of the cast in realizing the film added that Lautner is “emotionally right for the part” and has the movie studio’s full support.” Lautner has also been hitting the gym to pack on muscle before shooting begins on the sequel.

I agree. If possible, an actor should always be the same character in any sequels.

  2. Aaron • January 9, 2009 @ 10:18 AM

I second that, it’s important for continuity through the series. Imagine if they replaced Ron or Hermione in Harry Potter – it would have stuck out immediately.

I am so glad that he is going to get his chance. He wants it very badly and I think he will work to his best abilities to give us that. It is a huge career opener should he do a good job. Look at Rob Pattinson and how it opened the world to him (although I feel bad that he is hounded so much) I am sure that New Moon will be wonderfully done (hopefully 50 million will be enough to do the wolves justice)

Bravo!! It was the right decision to stay with Taylor as Jacob Black. He has the chemistry already with Kristen’s Bella and with Movie Magic and effects everything will fall into place. Can’t wait to see New Moon!!!

Excellent news. I renewed my interest in Jacob after seeing him on the screen. I thought he was even a better fit than the book described.

  6. quinn • January 9, 2009 @ 11:53 AM

That is good to hear. I agree with Nancy about having the same actor in the sequel when possible but hey did anyone really miss Katie Holmes in Dark Knight

  7. Jo-Anne. • January 9, 2009 @ 12:51 PM

    I didn’t miss her, quinn, good point…
I am amazed how popular this Twilight is, huge following on these storylines

  8. Abigail • January 9, 2009 @ 3:19 PM

OMG!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Taylor Lautner is Jacob Black!!!!!!!!!!!1

  9. michelle • January 9, 2009 @ 3:29 PM

@quinn: if were possible, i’d want ‘batman begins’ to be refilmed with maggie gyllenhal (erasing katie holmes–she was terrible in it). :/

  10. Debbie • January 9, 2009 @ 4:11 PM

I didn’t even know there was talk of replacing Taylor with another actor. No, no, no!!!!!! He is Jacos and is perfect for the part. The moment I saw him in a magazine as the actor to play Jacob I fell in love with him. He will do the part justice, just you all wait and see.

  11. laura • January 9, 2009 @ 4:59 PM

    @michelle

i second that! katie holmes shouldn’t even be associated with the batman franchise!

and i’m so happy that he got the part again. it just wouldn’t be right if he didn’t. and that other guy seemed like such an arrogant dick. michael copon or something?

  12. jordan • January 9, 2009 @ 5:11 PM

I agree, Taylor did an amzing job. Its always hard to step into a role, but he did an amazing job. im glad they brought him back, and the should keep the same characters throughout the series

  13. sk8tergirl • January 9, 2009 @ 5:20 PM

    WOOT WOOT WOOT! Awesome!

  14. Taylor • January 9, 2009 @ 5:24 PM

I hate it when people change the person for the sequel… i mean have any of you seen Daddy day camp? the sequel to daddy day care… it sucks

  15. MIZFINETHING • January 9, 2009 @ 5:44 PM

Good job Taylor !! Way to go!!

  16. PEACH • January 9, 2009 @ 6:21 PM

I too agree that LAUTNER should not be replaced as the character JACOB. HE is PERFECT for the role. After reading the
four books there is NO WAY it would be the
same without him. Looking forward to ALL the
    sequels.

  17. tributegirl • January 9, 2009 @ 7:05 PM

Good, I’ve always hated it when they change an actor in a sequel.

  18. ke • January 10, 2009 @ 12:08 AM

Ditto. Whenever they change actors, it totally takes away from the connection a viewer makes with the character(s) and the storyline.

And heck no, I did not miss Katie Holmes. I do feel sorry for her thought coz I feel like half of the sudden animosity people have for her is mainly due to the fact that she’s with Tom Cruise. I don’t think people hated her so much before she became ‘TomKat’.

That’s great! I’ve read all the books WAY too many times and seen the movie too much aswell, and I’m completely obsessed with the Twilight saga. I really wish that New Moon will come out sooner than Nov/2009, but I’m really glad that Lautner gets to stay as Jacob because I agree that he fits the role perfectly. I couldn’t see someone replacing him, and if that did happen I’m sure it would dissapoint many fans. Great job on Twilight, it’s amazing!

  20. KaLey • January 10, 2009 @ 12:35 PM

I feel that changing the actor that plays jacob black would have ruined the movies for everyone, a lot of people i know were already disappointed that things from the book were left out, and i believe that those who have read the books would be the toughest critics of the movies. I have read and own all the books, and i have seen twilight, he does an excellent job in twilight as jacob, and i think if he were replaced that some people may lose interest, i cant wait to see new moon and how well the transformation of jacob went, i assume it will be amazing.

  21. Leela • January 10, 2009 @ 5:08 PM

I’m very happy they directo has decided to keep Tylor. Because one he’s in Twilight and it’d be pretty stupid to cut out someone who’s alredy in the first movie. Yeah he changes a whole lot but I’m content that they are leeping him.
Although there have been rumors about the directors wanting to t change the whole movie around because Edward is gone for most of the book…which means not much Edward not much of Robert. But why? It’s totally oblivious to the whole book!!! They said they want less of Jacob and more of Edward which is also stupid b/c it’s all about Bella and Jacob, and then the people who’ve read the books will be very dissapointed by the portration of the movie and maybe not even go see it in the theaters. So they’ll loose money and obviously won’t make as much money as they did before. So has anyone heard anything about NEW MOON???
Anywho I’m happy they aren’t letting go of Taylor :]

  22. joanna =] • January 10, 2009 @ 8:06 PM

thak you!! thank you!! THANK YOU!! I am soo happy that Taylor will be playing jacob again!! I was really worried that he would be replaced and now I am sooo HAPPY that he’s not!! I totally support him and you ROCK TAYLOR!! I LUV YOU TAYLOR!!

  23. Anonymous • January 10, 2009 @ 9:22 PM

I LOVE YOU TAYLOR!!!!!! You rock. I’m sooo excited that you can paly the part of JAcob Black in New Moon. Life would suck without you!

  24. Arnold • January 11, 2009 @ 12:04 AM

What about all the different Lassies. No one noticed the difference and the show continued for a decade.

  25. vicki • January 11, 2009 @ 1:08 AM

Haven’t seen Twilight but I loved the first two books. This boy has a great look for Jacob, in my opinion, so I’m glad he’s going to keep on playing him.
    P.S. Arnold, you’re hilarious:)

  26. KC • January 11, 2009 @ 1:47 AM

Just to comment on the second post about changing the characters in Harry Potter…. THEY DID! There are 2 different Dumbledores!
    (Ya, I know….)

Also, Taylor Lautner is awesome. I watch him every monday in “My Own Worst Enemy”!
    Show support, watch the show!!

  27. Not a girl but a woman • January 11, 2009 @ 3:42 AM

um “kc” thats because the first Dumbledore DIED! …
as far as my comments on Taylor as Jacob …I like the Jacob in my head better from when i read the book, he was a lot hotter..more mature looking and after is “transformation” more manly…lol …
and i hope the lovely sequel coming out has less in your tight shots and more dynamic camra nagles than twilight.

  28. Lu • January 11, 2009 @ 6:14 PM

It is nice for Taylor that he was re-cast as Jacob, but I don’t think that it would have been that bad to have used him for the earlier part of New Moon, then have a new actor portray Jacob for the rest of New Moon and on as the charter transforms so drastically. Unless the director isn’t going to stick to that part of the story line. If so, now they may have to do some special effects to Taylor to make him seem to get bigger and taller.

  29. Cheyenne miller • January 11, 2009 @ 10:07 PM

    I HATE TWILIGHT

  30. Courtney • January 11, 2009 @ 11:04 PM

Uhhh…..I love twilight and plus i am glad that TAYLOR is playing JACOB…he is what i pictured when i read the books…he is perfect for the part….glad he is in it !!!!

  31. Lisa Vandermolen • January 11, 2009 @ 11:53 PM

Thank you for keeping him for the next movie.. he was good as Jacob Black… does anybody know when New Moon is coming out to theatres?

  32. Danielle • January 12, 2009 @ 11:36 AM

I heard that “New Moon” should be in theaters Nov’09 & I’m ecstatic to hear that they are keeping the same cast and crew!

  33. Alex • January 12, 2009 @ 11:06 PM

I can’t wait for it too. I’m hoping that whole long part where Edward is gone is shortened though. It was really long, they would be better off only making it about 15 minutes or less in the movie.

  34. Adriane • January 12, 2009 @ 11:09 PM

They should keep the same cast, but changing the director is good. The last director let Kristen Stewart get away with basically phoning in her performance, and had Robert Pattinson and Jacob’s dad and Jasper make weird faces. They should also get better wigs/makeup for Carlisle and Jasper, they were laughable. And not so much makeup on Robert, he had more makeup on than Kristen. Actually, I don’t think she was wearing any throughout the movie.

  35. Cathy • January 14, 2009 @ 11:31 PM

They should keep the same cast…I’m so happy. And the Author should write a continuos books from this ones.I already read all the books and I’m hunger for more.We have to know what happens with Renesme and Jacob , What happend with Charlie, did he find out about Bella and another things….

  36. dae • January 16, 2009 @ 5:01 AM

Very glad to see him reprising his role. I can’t think of anyone else who could accomodate his character as he did, but he, himself.
    Bravo!!

I’ve noticed a few missing from the line up such as the director! Oh well, the actors are what really make the movie (with the directors help of course) but seeing differet people play said character in a sequel ruins the movie, the effect and quality. Makes it “who cares” like.
The director doesn’t, the actors don’t, so why should the audience? Ya’ know?

  37. jessica • January 20, 2009 @ 2:59 PM

    yes¡¡
jacob is my favourite actor in this film
    i love that (L)

  38. nadina • March 29, 2009 @ 3:39 PM

i think taylor should continue being jacob because he is the perfect person for the role. it don’t make sense to switch up the actors. plus i LOVE taylor lautner. jacob is my fav character
