The Hunger Games: Mockingjay soars to top of weekend box office again

TheHungerGamesMockingjayPart1For the second weekend in a row The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, topped the box office with an estimated $56.9 million earned over the American Thanksgiving weekend. The first part of the final installment of the franchise follows Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) as she embraces being the symbol of the rebellion against President Snow (Donald Sutherland) and the Capitol. The epic finale currently holds a 3 star Tribute user rating.

Coming in second was newcomer Penguins of Madagascar, which earned an estimated $25.8 million. This spinoff of the extremely successful Madagascar franchise follows the popular penguin characters as they unhappily join forces with an undercover group of animals in order to bring down an evil scientist who is set on eliminating their species. The animated film currently holds a 5 star Tribute user rating after its first weekend at the box office.

Taking third place this week, dropping from the number two spot, was Disney’s Big Hero 6, earning an additional $18.8 million in its fourth week. The Marvel comic-inspired animation is currently holding a 4.4 star Tribute user rating. In the fourth spot was Christopher Nolan‘s sci-fi film Interstellar, earning $15.8 million. After four weeks at the box office the film currently holds a 3.9 star Tribute user rating.

Rounding out the top five was Horrible Bosses 2 with $15.7 million in its opening weekend. The sequel to the 2011 comedy reunites the main cast and follows Nick (Jason Bateman), Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) and Dale (Charlie Day) on their new business venture. However, things take a turn after an investor tries to pull one over on them. In order to save their company they hatch a plan to kidnap the investor’s adult son for ransom. The comedy currently holds a 3.3 star Tribute user rating. ~Janine Wyslobicky
