The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road, and The Martian were among the winners at the Art Directors Guild Awards last night.
The Leonardo DiCaprio-starring movie beat off competition from Bridge of Spies, Crimson Peak, The Danish Girl and Trumbo to pick up the Period Film prize at the ceremony – which honors excellence in production design – while the action reboot won the Fantasy Film trophy and Sir Ridley Scott‘s sci-fi adventure scored a win in the Contemporary Film category.
In the television categories, Game of Thrones, House of Cards, The Muppets, American Horror Story: Hotel and The Big Bang Theory were all honored.
Joy filmmaker David O. Russell was presented with the Cinematic Imagery Award by Josh Brolin and gave a passionate speech about storytelling.
He said: “Stories have seen me through the night, stories have saved my life.”
Elsewhere at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Patrizia von Brandenstein – the first woman to win an Oscar in production design, for Amadeus – William J. Newmon, Bill Anderson and Harrison Ellenshaw received lifetime achievement awards, and four pioneering women, production designer Carmen Dillon, production designer and illustrator Dorothea Holt Redmond, production and costume designer Patricia Norris, and art director and set designer Dianne Wager, were inducted into the ADG Hall of Fame.
Film journalist Robert Osborne was honored with the newly created William Cameron Menzies Award, but was unable to attend so Diane Baker picked up the prize on his behalf.
Presenters during the evening included Bryan Cranston, LL Cool J, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jaime Pressly, O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Will Forte.
