The Wolverine leads this week’s new releases

This week’s notable new film releases includes a much-anticipated superhero action flick, two provocative comedies and an Oscar contender. Leading the pack is the latest X-Men spin-off, The Wolverine, directed by James Mangold. This film marks Hugh Jackman‘s sixth time playing the adamantium-infused mutant. Taking place after the events of 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, Wolverine finds himself in Tokyo, Japan, where he encounters a mysterious man who offers him the chance to live as a mortal. According to reports, there is a post-credits scene that will have fans hyped up for next’s year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past.
If you’re looking for something to make you laugh, you have two options. The first is the raunchy comedy, titled The To Do List. Maggie Carey’s debut feature film stars Aubrey Plaza as a college-bound girl who plans to complete a list of risqué goals before starting school. One of those goals includes losing her virginity. If sex jokes aren’t your thing, your other option this week isn’t exactly family friendly comedy either. Crystal Fairy stars Michael Cera as a young 20-something embarking on an adventure with his friends to Chile, in search of a legendary shamanistic hallucinogen known as the San Pedro cactus. So if want to take your kids to the movies, we recommend Despicable Me 2 or Monsters University instead.
Another up-and-coming director making his feature film debut is Ryan Coogler with Fruitvale Station. The indie drama tells the harrowing true story of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old black man who was shot and killed by police while waiting at a subway station. Expect to hear the film’s title a lot in the upcoming awards season since it emerged with immense Oscar buzz earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, winning both the Grand Jury Prize for dramatic feature and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film. Also expect its young breakout star Michael B. Jordan to get a Best Actor nod. ~Alfonso Espina
