This weekend’s releases – Black Mass, Captive and more!

Black MassTGIF, the last work day of the week is here! Well, it’s great if you don’t work weekends. If you do, our condolences. But if you have time for a movie, here’s what’s new at a box office near you.

Johnny Depp stars as Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger in the crime drama Black Mass – which also had its TIFF red carpet premiere September 14. (Click this link to check out our gallery!) Whitey teams up with an unlikely ally: FBI agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton). The cop and criminal share one goal: eliminate the Italian mob. Click here for showtimes.

If you enjoyed The Maze Runner, check out phase two, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) begins to suspect that they are still captives. When they think it can’t get any worse, upon escaping, the group find even more devastation. Click here for showtimes.

War Room makes its Canadian debut after releasing in the States in August and holding the top spot at the box office. From the outside, Tony (T.C. Stallings) and Elizabeth Jordan (Priscilla Evans Shirer) seem to have it all – successful careers, a lovely home and a beautiful daughter – but things aren’t always what they seem. They’re marriage is falling apart and their daughter is caught in up in the swirl of things. But with the help of an elderly woman, Tony and Elizabeth learn that with a little faith, anything is possible. Click here for showtimes.

Opening in Toronto, Captive tells the true-story drama of Brian Nichols (David Oyelowo), the target of a city-wide manhunt who holds recovering meth addict Ashley Smith (Kate Mara) hostage in her own home. In the midst of all the chaos, the two find solace in each other. Click here for showtimes.

If you need a laugh, Cooties opens in Toronto, Edmonton and Calgary. A cafeteria food virus hits an elementary school, transforming the children into a swarm of sadistic monsters. In Toronto, the thriller Listening makes its debut. A group of grad students invent mind-reading technology that destroys their lives and threatens the future of free will itself. The film already premiered in select U.S. cities and will hit theatres in Vancouver on September 20. Click here for showtimes.
