Toni Braxton announces battle with lupus

By Alexandra Heilbron on November 17, 2010 | 4 Comments

At a benefit lunch to raise awareness for lupus, singer Toni Braxton revealed she’s been struggling with the illness herself. She told the audience, “Take a look, this is what lupus looks like.” Lupus is a disease that causes the immune system to be unable to tell the difference between a person’s own tissues and foreign tissues, leading to inflammation of various organs. Lady Gaga placed an ad in the event’s program, saying, “Toni, your strength is admirable. As a woman whose family has been affected by lupus, I understand your struggle and have you in my thoughts. —Gaga.” Braxton’s younger sister Tamar is married to Gaga’s manager, Vincent Herbert. After the event, Braxton tweeted: “Had a great time at the 8th Annual Hollywood Bag Ladies Luncheon. A big moment for me. It was a tough decision to come out about it. But it was such a relief!”

I have dealt with Lupus in my family as well and it is not fun. I wish her the best of luck there will be good days and bad. Don’t let it slow you down.
