Twilight author to release new book

Bree-Tanner-CoverStephenie Meyer, who wrote the four books that the Twilight movies are based on, is releasing her first new book in nearly two years. It’s called The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner and is based on a character from her book Eclipse. She says she began it as an exercise while writing Eclipse, and considered putting it on her site as a short story. “However, the story grew longer than I anticipated,” she admits, and so Twilight fans can rejoice — finally a new book! Fans will be surprised to hear that Bree, a  newborn vampire, is more prominently featured in the film The Twilight Saga: Eclipse than in the book Eclipse, but it’s because Meyer let director David Slade read a draft of the novella while he was prepping the movie, and so he incorporated Bree into the film, saying, “I think fans are going to love the fascinating details involved in the loves, fears and actions of an emerging vampire.” The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner will be released in stores on June 5, 2010 in hardcover, with one dollar from each book sold in the US going to the American Red Cross International Response Fund. Also, as a special thank you to fans, Meyer is providing access to read the novel on a website, www.breetanner.com, from June 7 to July 5, 2010. “I’d always considered The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner as something for the fans,” said Meyer. “They have been so supportive of all things Twilight.” Now if only Meyer would complete and release Midnight Sun, which tells the story of Twilight, but from Edward’s point of view. ~Alexandra Heilbron [poll=174]

Me too, mandee! I’m dying to read Midnight Sun. I read the first few chapters on her website and I can’t wait for the whole book to be published.

It is all fine and good to have more Bree, but I wonder at what cost?! There is enough in the book to make a long feature film already. What did DS cut out to make time for Bree? There had better be enough Jacob and not cut out important interaction with J&B&E. Personally, she has such a small roll in the book Eclipse, I really don’t care to have her magically have more time in the film. Midnight Sun is the way to go.

I agree, Cara. I don’t even remember Bree from the book.

I love the cover art for the book!

++Spoiler++(If you have not read the book)

Bree does play a kind of important small role in eclipse. She is not there long, she’s in one chapter. But still, when the Cullens say they will take her in and help her to overcome the taste of human blood. The Voltrie say that that can not happen, because she broke the vampire law and they kill her. But really their true motives were to keep the Cullen family from getting bigger. Due to the fact that they are the second biggest coven of vampires next to the Voltire. They do not what another coven that can rival their own! so Bree pays the ultimate price, because of rules she did not know, and the voltires fear of a rival force.

yea i’m still undecided on whether this detour from the bella/edward story will be just as good as the actual twilight saga. Only way to find out, buy the book, which of course i will do:D

I think it is always good to introduce new characters as it keeps things from getting stagnant. It is important to maintain the original characters as well, as we have already identified with them and are left wanting more.

Maggie Shayne continues to maintain her original characters while also introducing new ones in subsequent books. This has been widely successful for her and she also has a huge following of fans.

Having said that, although I do not remember Bree previously mentioned, I will certainly read the book “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” online and also purchase the book when it comes out in paperback.
