With Saving Mr. Banks coming out later this month, starring Tom Hanks as the much loved Walt Disney, there could be no better time to launch a Walt Disney museum. As it turns out, the home that Walt was born in, in Chicago, Illinois, is in talks to be turned into a museum to honor the famed animator and businessman. As the Walt Disney Company celebrates its 90th anniversary, Dina Benadon and Brent Young want to recreate the hallowed childhood home as it was when Walt lived in it. The couple, who design theme park attractions (just as Walt did), bought the house earlier this year for a mere $173,000. The house was originally built by Walt’s father, Elias Disney, in 1893. The couple is using Kickstarter, a funding platform, to raise the $500,000 they need to renovate the home. Rewards such as their name in a guestbook left in the home, a roof shingle, or even an overnight stay in the house, will be given to donors who give certain amounts of money. Walt’s great-nephew, Roy P. Disney, has given the project his blessing stating, “On behalf of the Disney family, we are so pleased to see Walt Disney’s historic birthplace and family home being restored to its humble origins.” ~ Brie Davis
