Will Smith refuses to punish his kids. The actor's two youngest children – Willow, 12, and Jaden, 14 – with his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, followed in his footsteps to stardom and Will says they have complete control over their own lives despite their young age. Last year Willow posted a photo of herself with a tongue piercing as well as a picture of herself dancing with a Vegas stripper pole, while Jaden has publicly admitted he routinely brings girls into his bedroom and locks the door, despite his mother's disapproval. He also tried to get into a nightclub with Justin Bieber but was turned away. Will told Britain’s Metro, “We don't do punishment. The way that we deal with our kids is, they are responsible for their lives. Our concept is, as young as possible, give them as much control over their lives as possible and the concept of punishment, our experience has been - it has a little too much of a negative quality. So when they do things - and you know, Jaden, he's done things - you can do anything you want as long as you can explain to me why that was the right thing to do for your life." ~Sarah Dos Santos

I really like Will Smith but this is a little silly. Providing your kids choices is good but giving them complete control is detrimental. They are still too impressionable to make good choices. Be a parent!

This is just a continuation of the garbage espoused by that idiot Dr. Benjamin Spock. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Spock . How Dr. Spock Destroyed America - WorldNetDaily http://www.wnd.com/2009/01/87179/

Wow, Jaden brings girls home and locks his door.... if that girl turns out pregnant, the Smith family will for sure wish they punished their kids. I understand the logic behind their parenting skills, but there is a fine line between letting your kids run wild and free and giving some discipline. I'm sure they are close with their kids, their kids see them as friends and people they can openly talk to, but they are still their parents. Kids these days *smh

All kids need parents; you have to try and guide them in the right ways, at least until their brains are developed enough that they can make more sensible decisions in their lives. This kind of hands-off parenting is no parenting at all.

That's called Lazy Parenting. And when these kids F-Up big time, they may rethink that whole "We dont punish" thing

  6. Amanda on April 25, 2013 11:27 AM

I don't want to judge, but this just doesn't sit with me. Children need guidelines and, dare I say it, rules. Of course you don't want to be too overbearing but letting them do whatever they want as long as they can explain why it's "right" for them...I feel that is too lax.

Parenting is where kids learn right from wrong and develop the morals that will guide them through the rest of their lives. Being a Hollywood multimillionaire will no doubt allow Mr. Smith to keep them out of jail for a while but that's where they are headed. So sad that these two lives are being wasted.

"and you know, Jaden, he's done things - you can do anything you want as long as you can explain to me why that was the right thing to do for your life."

Soooo, when Jaden can't explain why it was the right thing to do for his life then what???

  9. Linda Martin on April 25, 2013 12:31 PM

Idiots!! another home where the kids rule and wonder why things don't go their way in the work place and their marriages go wrong. What a stupid way to raise children who are acting this way to hear their parents say NO!!!!

  10. Heather on April 25, 2013 1:03 PM

OK, cool, cool. My question is, what happens if, (and when), they can't 'explain to me why that was the right thing to do for your life'...

Age appropriate control is good, but he needs to be a smarter parent and step in when they are making non-age-appropriate decisions.
As a kid my parents let me make a lot of decisions on my own. Sometimes I made bad decisions just because I was hoping they would step in and stop me. Kids do not feel safe without boundaries.

raising your children and parenting them is not about punishment when they make mistakes....it is about guidelines and expectations......then consequences. Consequences are all directly related to the act.....positive and negative. It is up to parents to decide what they will be until at some point they will be old enough to deal with the natural consequences.....be it what they may.

  13. lol on April 25, 2013 4:34 PM

Yeah that's cool, let them kill people too by drinking and driving. How about cocaine, why not?! It's their life after all, they're smart enough to know at least that.

What a terrible excuse for a parent. Anything for publicity. And his little shithead son will soon learn the behind the scenes of Hollywood and he won't like it.

I saw an interview with Jada where she was talking about how she and will have an open marriage type thing and she said that she told Will that he could do whatever he wanted as long as he could look at himself at the end of the day and be happy. So really they're just passing down their own concepts to their kids, no matter how odd they are. Still, it seems a little irresponsible.

loser!! this is USA the land of the free. Two more kids 12 going on 23. THey will soon learn as the other kids did eventually. By then, they will have been finger printed for some silly thing.

  16. nick on April 25, 2013 9:36 PM

NO guidelines great parenting ... soon pregnant underage kids. Smart move

I conquer Nick. thIS IS A TIME BOMB WAITING TO EXPLODE. POOR PARENTING PRODUCES RUDE SIBLINGS.

  18. lupo cafone on April 25, 2013 9:41 PM

parents have to stop acting like their kids buddies.

  19. Gus on April 25, 2013 11:35 PM

well lets just see how they turn out. I cannot be that type of parent myself i believe and guidance and discipline but dont believe in harsh punishment for my kids. Some parents believe in punishment and it works other times it dont. So hey maybe it may work out for their kids, i would just not take that chance myself. but hey home of the free so they have freedom of choice in parenting too

I'm Asian, I grew up in an Asian home and I know other races out there experienced that belt, slipper or hand for that matter hit them at one point in their lives. Many people nowadays don't agree with that method of parenting but you know what, it works. I turned out fine. Not fine, I turned out GREAT. I was disciplined, I learned about respect and I knew that things aren't just handed to me, I had to earn it. I strongly believe people should go back to raising their kids that way because kids nowadays are getting away with way too much. I see children talking back to their parents, kissing their teeth and dressing so provocatively. Keep your kids in line man. Show 'em who's boss.

  21. Tack on April 26, 2013 10:52 AM

Ok Grandpa Willy, lets see how you react when several pregnant girls show up at your door. My money says you will put the blame soley on them and claim they are all after your money. BAD BAD parent!

  22. Culver on April 26, 2013 11:29 AM

translation: we are rich and successful, we don't care about your rules, we know better than you poor folks.

Geez he almost sounds proud that his son 'has done things'

I'm glad I don't spend money on Will Smith movies anymore. Just my small contribution to reclaiming sanity in this f-ed up world.

I find it amusing and chilling that the worst thing Americans fear is pregnancy. Not drugs (I am not talking about marijuana which should be legalized), not drinking and driving, not violence, but pregnancy.
That is as sad a commentary on the sex-negative prudish part of American society as it is on the Smiths' decisions. I am not a huge fan of theirs (or of kids, truth be told), but if the WORST thing that happens to your son is he gets a girl pregnant out of an act of consensual sex, not rape, coercion or deception, then you should get down on your knees and thank whatever god you believe in that this is all that happened. Abortions are legal in your country (for now, unless sex-negative Rethuglicans take power), and so is adoption, and even (horrors!) legal abandonment of babies (by mothers only; that is their free pass whereas men do not get that option---this is what feminists call "equality"), so again, if no life-threatening disease is spread, and nobody dies or gets beaten, etc etc., then I say let kids make up their own minds.
I feel they are being too lax, but they're not MY kids and as long as they stay peaceful (note I did not say "law abiding" because your country has some ridiculous "laws"), then more power to them.
As to the open marriage? All Jada has said is "divorce is not an option", so she HAS to "standby her man". Do I believe either has been "unfaithful" or has had the occasional sexual dalliance? I honestly don't know. Again, not my business, but theirs. Monogamy is not natural and to acknowledge that take guts and courage rarely displayed in your country.
So whereas I may not agree with everything they are doing, as long as nobody gets hurt, leave them alone and let them raise their children how they see fit.

  24. Debbie Magnin on April 28, 2013 6:27 PM

will this is such a disappointing attitude no wonder kids are such monsters these days. it is parenting like this, that makes hoodlums out of the kids.

  25. Scoobydoo on May 2, 2013 3:19 PM

What's that saying? "Spare the rod, spoil the child?" With this much freedom and lack of discipline, things are bound to go south quickly.
