Winona Ryder revealed to Interview Magazine that she was once told she wasn’t pretty enough to be an actress. Winona, best known for her roles in Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, said that during an audition, a casting director stopped her and said, “Listen, kid. You should not be an actress. You are not pretty enough. You should go back to wherever you came from and you should go to school. You don’t have it.” Ryder admits, “I honestly think that she thought she was doing me a favor.” Fortunately for Winona, her parents raised her to be comfortable with being different. Although she was just a teenager at the time the casting director delivered that harsh advice, she “wasn’t crushed.” Now 41, Winona is making a comeback. She recently appeared in Black Swan and returned to Tim Burton’s world as the voice of Elsa Van Helsing in Frankenweenie. Next up is The Iceman with Michael Shannon, Chris Evans, and Ray Liotta later this month. ~Cassie Jasinski

The casting director was right. And so was Winona.
Of course the CD was only looking at one aspect of WInona, as if every actress has to be pretty or look the same way.
The casting director was wrong. Not only did she become an actress, but a very famous and successful one. She’s prettier than a lot of other successful actresses. Cameron Diaz anyone? Angelina Jolie? Scarlett Johansson? They’re all hideous.
Meh.
I’d still love to hit it!
