Woody Allen refuses anti-tobacco warnings in Blue Jasmine

Director Woody Allen refused to release his latest film, Blue Jasmine, in India after learning mandatory anti-tobacco warnings would be placed throughout the film. The movie features two smoking scenes and they would have had moving disclaimers on the bottom of the screen warning of the dangers of tobacco, as well as a warning message before the film begins. Sources close to Allen say that when he heard of this requirement, he pulled the film from its release in the sub-continent altogether. It was slated for release in roughly 30 cinemas. A publicist for Allen told Reuters: “Due to content in the film, it cannot be shown in India in its intended manner. Therefore, the film is not scheduled to play there.” The film was to be distributed through PVR Films and they say the director always has creative control.

“He wasn’t comfortable with the disclaimer that we are required to run when  some smoking scene is shown in films,” said head of distribution, Deepak Sharma. “He feels that when the scroll comes, attention goes to it rather than the scene. We had to abide by the law and we don’t have control over the film.” Blue Jasmine stars Cate Blanchett as a New York socialite who undergoes a dramatic life crisis after divorcing her husband. The dramedy also stars Alec Baldwin, Peter Sarsgaard and Sally Hawkins.

Was the smoking scenes really necessary or really necessary to fight over? Does it set the tone for the film? Anyway 30 theaters likely wouldn’t have generated that much $ for the studio anyway.

“I believe if the prime minister looks at the arguments they putting forward there every reason why there should be an investigation,” he said.
