The Forest on Blu-rayIf ever there were a time to binge watch a bunch of DVDs until you literally can’t see straight — this is it. This week we’ve got Margaery Tyrell herself Natalie Dormer starring in the horror feature The Forest, Superman number three Brandon Routh as an astronaut-in-training in the psychological thriller 400 Days, Morpheus AKA Laurence Fishburne as a ruthless assassin in the action drama Standoff and omnipresent ’90s It-Girl Ashley Judd in the ensemble comedy Big Stone Gap.~Shelby Morton

In The Forest, an American named Sara (Natalie Dormer) travels to Japan to search for her twin sister Jess, who has mysteriously disappeared in the Aokigahara Forest – a place where people often go to commit suicide. She meets an American writer who has experience in the forest and he offers to guide her in return for her story. After searching, they find Jess’s campground, but she’s nowhere to be found and they have to get back out before dark falls.

Brandon Routh and Dane Cook star as two of four aspiring astronauts who take part in a social experiment. They’re locked underground in a small chamber for a period of more than a year to test the psychological effects of deep space travel. They have no communication with the outside world and when they begin to experience illusions, they question if what is going on is part of the simulation or if it’s really happening. When one of them gets sick, they argue about whether it’s a trick to get them to open the hatch early, which will mean they’ve failed the test in the sci-fi thriller 400 Days.

In the small town of Big Stone Gap nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, self-proclaimed town spinster Ave Maria Mulligan (Ashley Judd) finds her life shaken up and forever changed after learning a long-buried family secret in the comedy Big Stone Gap. She decides to go to Italy to find a long-lost relative, just as she’s also finally finding love. This ensemble romantic comedy also stars Patrick Wilson, Whoopi Goldberg, Jane Krakowski, Anthony LaPaglia and Jenna Elfman.

Filmed in Canada, Standoff stars Ella Ballentine (who played the title role in the recent TV movie Anne of Green Gables) as a little girl who witnesses a man (Laurence Fishburne) shooting people in cold blood at a funeral. Not only that, but she took a photograph of him. When he spots her, she runs for her life and makes it to a farmhouse where Carter (Thomas Jane), an ex-soldier, lives alone. Carter lets the girl inside, but with only a few shotgun shells, Carter has to use his wits to keep the killer at bay.
