New releases in theaters – The Conjuring 2, Warcraft, and more

The Conjuring 2 posterHorror fans are surely foaming at the mouth for the release of the highly anticipated sequel to the 2013 box office smash The Conjuring. This time around, The Conjuring 2 follows Ed and Lorraine Warren to England, where a little girl is seemingly possessed by the evil spirit of an elderly man.

But it isn’t a runaway just yet — World of Warcraft gamers will definitely give the horror-loving crowd a run for their money, with the equally anticipated reboot Warcraft hitting theaters today.

And if by chance poltergeists and orcs just aren’t your jam, then there’s always the magical sequel Now You See Me 2, which brings back The Four Horseman and their spellbinding bag of tricks, or the romantic dramedy about a single New Yorker with a less-than-stable plan, Maggie’s Plan. ~Shelby Morton

In the fantasy flick Warcraft, in wide release today, the realm of Azeroth has enjoyed peace for many years, but now it may be on the brink of war when they are faced with a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors looking for another home when their world dies. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. One year after outwitting the FBI and winning the public’s adulation with their Robin Hood-style magic spectacles, The Four Horsemen (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody HarrelsonDave Franco, Lizzy Caplan) resurface for a comeback performance. Meanwhile, Thaddeus Bradley (Morgan Freeman), who wound up in jail due to the magicians, vows his revenge from his prison cell. During their sold-out performance in New York City, their show is hijacked and their boss, Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo), orders them to get off the stage. They exit the building and drop into a chute, and are surprised to find themselves in China. It turns out that Bradley is working with unethical tech magnate Walter Mabry (Daniel Radcliffe), who demands that The Four Horsemen steal the key to every computer system on the planet. Maggie (Greta Gerwig), who hasn’t had much luck with long-term relationships, wants to have a child. She decides that artificial insemination is the best option but no sooner has she begun the process than John (Ethan Hawke) enters her life. John, an academic, is unhappily married to Danish critical theorist Georgette Norgaard (Julianne Moore) and Maggie is the change he’s been searching for. He leaves Georgette and starts a life with Maggie. Maggie has what she wanted — a daughter and John — but she isn’t happy. As a result, she rethinks her plan and concocts a new one involving John and his ex-wife Georgette in the quirky dramedy Maggie’s Plan, in theaters everywhere today. Click here for showtimes.
