Oscar-nominated actress Karen Black has died of cancer at the age of 74. Black’s husband, filmmaker Stephen Eckelberry made the announcement yesterday on his Facebook page. He wrote: “It is with great sadness that I have to report that my wife and best friend Karen Black has just passed away, only a few minutes ago. Thank you all for all your prayers and love, they meant so much to her as they did to me.” Black, who is best known for her roles in Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, The Great Gatsby and Nashville, was diagnosed with ampullary cancer in November 2010. On Wednesday, Eckelberry revealed on Black’s official blog that he has been documenting her struggles with cancer for years now. Back in June, Eckelberry filmed Black having a “heart to heart’ conversation with her friend Elliot Mintz. “They spoke for almost two hours,” said Eckelberry. “With my daughter shooting second camera in the tiny room, I filmed the deeply moving and candid conversation. Karen of course is very enthusiastic about finding the right platform for some kind of presentation.” Black is survived by Eckelberry and their two children. ~Alfonso Espina
