Popular soap opera star and former Miss Venezuela Monica Spear and her ex-husband, Thomas Henry Berry, along with their five-year-old daughter Maya, spent New Year’s in Venezuela touring the mountains in the west and visiting the plains of Apure state. When the family was heading home in their Toyota Corolla, their tires were punctured by sharp objects placed by on the road. Just after two tow trucks arrived, several assailants headed towards the couple, apparently wanting to steal their car. Seeing them approach, Monica and Thomas locked themselves and their daughter in the car, but the robbers shot and killed the pair, firing at least six shots. Maya was shot in the leg and is in stable condition. According to CBC News, “fatal shootings are common in armed robberies in Venezuela,” but the murders have outraged Venezuelans, who are calling for action. Police have arrested five suspects but it unclear whether the tow truck drivers were involved in the incident and why the assailants waited for tow trucks to arrive being acting. ~Brie Davis
