The Artist big winner at the BAFTA awards

The Artist picked up seven British Film Academy (BAFTA) Awards on its way to the Academy Awards, including Best Picture, director and actor (Jean Dujardin). It also picked up awards for original screenplay, costume design, music and cinematography. Director Michel Hazanavicius said he was very surprised his film won so many awards because when he first wanted to make the film, many declined to be part of it, saying that because it had no dialogue, there wasn’t really a script. He added, tongue-in-cheek: “So English people are very clever.”

Meryl Streep, who won a Golden Globe this year for her performance as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher also picked up the Best Actress BAFTA award, so it’s starting to look like she may be headed to Oscar victory as well. Other Golden Globe winners who also won BAFTA awards were Christopher Plummer — who at 84 is the oldest BAFTA award winner ever — for Beginners and Octavia Spencer for her supporting role in The Help. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy won Outstanding British Film, while Tyrannosaur, an independent drama about domestic violence, picked up the award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. Pictured above are Dujardin, Thomas Langmann and Hazanavicius of The Artist with presenters Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe.
