The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner – an Eclipse novella

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner – an Eclipse novella was released on June 5, 2010, just in time for Twilight fans to read it before going to see The Twilight Saga: Eclipse

If you’re like me and don’t recall Bree’s brief appearance in Eclipse, she’s a newborn vampire who surrenders to Carlisle at the end of the Cullens’ battle with newborns.

This novella gives Bree’s story up to and including that time. Author Stephenie Meyer wrote it after Eclipse (the book) but before Eclipse (the movie) was filmed, and allowed the actors playing the vampires involved in the story to read it. It will be interesting to see how they play it.

Bree didn’t have a happy life as a human, and her vampire life is filled with anxiety. Newborn vampires are volatile, and often wind up killing each other. However, their leader, Riley, has them stay together in a house during the day (they’re allowed out at night) because he and Victoria are creating them to kill Bella and the Cullens. In case you haven’t read the first book or haven’t seen the movie, Victoria wants revenge on the Cullens, who killed her lover, James, to protect Bella.

As always, Meyer presents a well-rounded portrait of an interesting, sympathetic character. Despite the fact that Bree kills several people during the course of the book, and in spite of knowing from Eclipse that Bree doesn’t get a happy ending, you’ll find yourself hoping that somehow it will all turn out right for her.

There’s an interesting scene in the book witnessed by Bree that involves Victoria and the Volturi. Bree doesn’t know at the time what it all means, but we find out something very interesting about the Volturi that we wouldn’t have known otherwise.

Twilight die-hards will want a copy of this book to complete their growing collection (save room on your shelf for Midnight Sun – which is Twilight from Edward’s point of view – there’s no release date so far, but keep the hope alive). If you just want to read the book without purchasing it, you can go to www.breetanner.com from June 7 to July 5, 2010 and read it online for free. ~Alexandra Heilbron
