At the TIFF press conference promote his new film The Road, Viggo Mortensen angrily denied that he’s quitting acting. A prolific actor who’s had films screening at the Toronto festival for the past several years, he told reporters how the rumor got started. “I was just honest with someone a little while back who asked me if I had a movie lined up. I said ‘no’ and they wrote ‘Oh, he’s quitting.’ I never said it,” he explained. “I guess I should have been a bullshitter like a lot of actors when asked if I’ve got anything lined up, and said, ‘Oh I’ve got 20 films, but I’m not at liberty to discuss’.” Having worked steadily in film since wel before his starring turn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Mortensen says his next project is a play in Spain. “Beyond that I’m not sure what I’m doing. I think if you’re in a play, that’s considered acting as well.” In The Road, he ‘s joined on screen by Australian youngster Kodi Smit-McPhee, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce and Robert Duval. The film, which premiered today at Ryerson, also screens Monday at 3 p.m. at Scotiabank Theatre 2.
