Why Luke Skywalker is missing from Star Wars: The Force Awakens poster

Mark HamillThere’s been much speculation about why Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is missing from the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens poster that was released this week. The other original cast members, Harrison Ford as Han Solo and Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia can be found right smack dab in the middle, so where’s Luke?

The main theory that’s being put forward is that Luke Skywalker has turned dark, like his father before him. There could be some basis for that, considering that in a 1991 Dark Horse Comics mini-series, Luke becomes a reborn Emperor Palpatine’s apprentice, in effect his father, Darth Vader, which puts Luke and Leia on opposite sides.

Additionally, during a 2005 episode of IFC’s Dinner For Five TV show, Mark Hamill and director J.J. Abrams were guests. Mark talked about the possibility of Luke turning evil, saying, “As an actor, that would be more fun to play. I just thought that’s the way it was going from when we finished [The Empire Strikes Back]. I figured that’s what will be the pivotal moment. I’ll have to come back, but it will be I have Han Solo in my crosshairs and I’ll be about to kill him or about to kill the Princess or about to kill somebody that we care about.”

There are some rumours now that Luke is Kylo Ren…

Based on the information previously released, I don’t think Luke has turned to the darkside. Although it would be a huge twist to find out Luke is actually Kylo Ren, but if that’s the case then who is Adam Driver’s character? And if Luke does turn out to be Kylo Ren, remember you heard it here first! LOL!
However, I digress. Anyway, I think Luke is left off the poster because initially, after the new characters find Luke’s light saber they meet Han Solo and Chewbacca and spend most of this film trying to find Luke and return it to him. As the journey continues, they realize they need Luke and his mastery of the force to help the resistance overcome the First Order. So because a big part of the plot is that they are searching for Luke, I’m sure they don’t want to reveal that they find him in this movie by including him on the poster.

This is such a great article, I love the speculation!

Luke is not going to the Dark Side, Luke is not Kylo Ren. Luke re-establishes the Jedi temple to fight against the Sith and the Darkside.
