Tribute talks to Debra Messing about her hit TV series and starring opposite Richard Gere in the supernatural thriller The Mothman Prophecies.

Q: The Mothman Prophecies is a very scary movie. When you read the script how did you have the forsight of how spooky this was really going to be?
A: It doesn't come from the page. When I saw the film I was surprised at how eerie it was. Actually I got an inkling when I first met with Mark Pellington, the director. He was so passionate about this film and the story that was being told and when I read it I thought that this story could be told in many different ways. It could be really creepy and it could be sci-fi, it could be spiritual. I didn't know how it was going to be approached.

Q: So did the director help the actors in any special way to get you all into a creepy mood?
A: Yes, absolutely. Mark just dove in to this film. All over the production office in Pittsburgh there were images and pictures and artwork that were just so eerie and creepy and provocative. He also gave us all CDs to listen to of the wildest music, haunting music. The first day that we shot and I saw his camera work I realized immediately that he was going to be really pushing the envelope with the story telling and making it really suspenseful.

Q: Do you believe in supernatural forces and, given the choice to know what forces are lurking out there, would you want to know?
A: If there are really dark forces that are just haphazardly wreaking havoc I don't want to know (laughs). I don't know if I've had any supernatural things happen because most likely if they did happen I probably explained them away as my mind playing games or I didn't really hear that or I didn't really see that. I don't think I would have put that label on it.

Q: So did working on this movie make you think more about it?
A: Before this film I really didn't think that much about the paranormal or supernatural elements but after learning about The Mothman Prophecies, which I did not know about, I discovered that so many people from around the world have had these visions prior to tragic events and it made me really sit back and think. The fact that this film is based on true events gives it more weight and credibility. I guess after working on this what I've come up with is I don't have the answers. I don't think that we will ever have the answers when it comes to supernatural things but I am open to the possibility that things out there exist and we cannot see them but they are present, and in The Mothman Prophecies case it could be predictors of something really bad happening.

Q: This role is quite a departure from Will and Grace. How do you actually get through taping an episode of that show with out constantly cracking up?
A: (laughs) I don't. We break all the time. We are constantly making each other laugh which is the greatest part of my job. We work very hard, it's really exhausting work because it is so fast, but the great thing is that we enjoy working together and that we have these guffaw breakouts constantly. It's just part of our job, which is a great thing. It is wonderful to change genres and change mediums and have the opportunity to do something like The Mothman Prophecies. I feel very lucky.
