Tribute’s Bonnie Laufer talks to Verne Troyer, better known as the infamous "Mini-Me" in the Austin Powers movies.

B.L. Verne, I don’t know how you do it, as always Mini-Me manages to steal the film!
V.T. Oh shucks! Thank you.

B.L. After all this time, is it getting easier or is it just as hard to keep a straight face while you are making these movies?
V.T. Definitely, with Mike he makes it challenging because you never know what he is going to do and you have to try and react off of that. I enjoy it and doing a second one, and now the third one, you know what to expect a little bit more.

B.L. What do you love the most about playing Mini-Me?
V.T. It’s definitely a challenge not speaking and getting your point across to the audience. It’s like back in the day when we had silent films.

B.L. Mini-Me has no dialogue but we feel everything from you through your emotions, actions and facial expressions. How hard is that for you to convey?
V.T. It’s definitely challenging, but I enjoy that part of it. It’s hard not being able to speak, but hopefully the audience gets my point.

B.L. How generous is Mike Myers to work with?
V.T. He is such an amazing guy. If he wanted to do a fourth, fifth or whatever, I would love to do it. Just working with him and the whole cast; it’s like a big family reunion. We all work well together.

B.L. What was it like coming back to the set, after not seeing everyone for a couple of years?
V.T. I felt much more comfortable than I did on the second one. I remember when I did Austin 2 — my first day of shooting was when I come out and they reveal me being one eighth the size of Dr. Evil. I was so nervous and I had to do the pinkie thing with Mike. I was shaking. I was really nervous because I was such a big fan of the first one. And having the opportunity to be part of the second and now the third, I was just ecstatic.

B.L. I am sure since you started making these movies there is nobody in the world who doesn’t know who you are. How has being in Austin Powers dramatically changed your life?
V.T. Well, exactly the way you said it, dramatically. I am still trying to get used to it. I’m not saying that it’s a bad thing, but it’s hard to go out. You try to wear a hat and sunglasses and you can’t really get away with that. I just take it one day at a time and it’s given me a lot of opportunities as far as my career.

B.L. Why do you think people love Austin Powers movies so much?
V.T. I don’t know, a lot of catch phrases and the characters. Mike comes up with all of these different characters and they are hilarious. My favourite is Fat Bastard.

B.L. Why do you like Fat Bastard?
V.T. For his sick, potty humour.

B.L. Not to mention that he is so disgusting to look at.
V.T. Well, actually he got to shag in the last one.

B.L You also get a change of pace in this one because we see you playing Mini-Austin. How did you like that?
V.T. It was fun because Mini-Me goes through some changes and some different emotions from the last film.

B.L. Now if there were a number four, would you like to see Mini-Me get some lines? I for one would like to hear him talk.
V.T. I actually like the challenge of not saying anything, so as long as the audience likes it, I’m happy.

B.L. What is the coolest or craziest thing since becoming a huge star that has happened to you?
V.T. Well the coolest is being invited to the Playboy mansion all the time.

B.L. I guess hanging out with the Playmates isn’t too shabby.
V.T. Hanging out in the grotto, you know it's good.
