Tribute's Bonnie Laufer talks to legendary actor Robert Wagner about coming back in Austin Powers in Goldmember.

B.L. It's always nice to see Number 2 with the Austin Powers gang.
R.W. Isn't it great, I just love it.

B.L. How exciting is it for you after everything that you have done to be in these Austin Powers films?
R.W. It's great. It's absolutely terrific, I have never had so much fun in my entire life.

B.L. After making now the third instalment, has it gotten any easier not to lose it on set?
R.W. Well, you're cracking up a lot before but never during. Everybody's very professional and also, Jay Roach, the director, is a great help because he is always giving you adjustments. We're always trying something different. Everybody knows where we are going to go, it's all written. Mike has written everything down on paper. But when he comes in he may change it, or they may give you something else to do, or they may change the dialogue. But the characters are so well defined that you fall into it very easily as an actor. That was easy for me, but Mike wrote this role for me…

B.L. Yes, you met him on Saturday Night Live.
R.W. Yeah, and I was so grateful.

B.L. How flattering is that?
R.W. It's such a compliment and I just respect him so much. He's been so good to me. All of us have had this wonderful feeling for each other.

B.L. To me it seems like one big happy family. What was it like being back on the set with everyone again?
R.W. It was great; I'll give you an example. There's a sequence in the film when Number 2 opens up the talent agency and Dr. Evil comes in through the Hollywood Sign. Well they shot all of that one way, which was all my way, the whole day. But Verne (Mini-Me) and Mindy (Frau Fabissina), Seth Green and Mike got in full makeup, full wardrobe and played with me off-stage all day. It helped me so much as an actor, because when they were there in character, it helps you. So they are giving me everything they can to make me better.

B.L. Is it difficult getting used to wearing that eye patch?
R.W. Yes. Number 2 has had his eye patch with him all of his life, so I rehearsed at home with it a lot. I walked around the house with it and got used to it. When you take part of your vision away it gets you off balance a bit, well it did me anyway. Mike wrote him with an eye patch, and you don't know what that patch is for, really. You don't know whether he needs it or he doesn't, but he always has his eye on Dr. Evil.

B.L. After 50 years in show business you got your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Were you excited?
R.W. Very, that's a great honour. Mike is going to present it to me and I'm very grateful for that because he's made me Number 2 to millions of people, but he always says I'll be Number One with him.
