Selma Blair Biography

SELMA BLAIR

Date of Birth: June 23, 1972

Born in the city of Southfield, Michigan, Blair's intention for her future was to become a photographer. She attended New York University before graduating from the University of Michigan with a B.A. and a B.F.A. in Fine Arts and English. Moving to New York City to pursue her career, she soon realized her real talent and strength lay in cinema.

Instead of a photography studio, she found her way into acting classes at The Stella Adler Conservatory and The Column Theatre. When an agent attended one of her classes, he singled her out and a week later she received her Screen Actors Guild (SAG) card doing a television commercial.

After making a number of appearances on series like The Adventures of Pete and Pete and Xena: Warrior Princess, Blair made her feature film bow in 1997's In & Out (1997). The small part led to meatier roles in a number of independent films. Following a bit part in the teen comedy, Can't Hardly Wait (1998), she found more regular work on the series, Zoe, Duncan, Jack & Jane, playing the title character of Zoe Bean.

In 1999 she won the role of shy, bumbling Cecile in the feature Cruel Intentions (1999). Her performance garnered two MTV Award nominations, for Best Kiss (which she won) and a nomination for Breakthrough Female Performance.

The grand exposure paved the way to more feature work including roles in Legally Blonde (2001), A Guy Thing (2003) and Hellboy (2004). In 2002 she won a Young Hollywood Award in the Next Generation category. Blair married actor Ahmet Zappa (son of rock singer Frank Zappa) on January 24, 2004. Unfortunately, the marriage only lasted just a little over two years—they were divorced in November 2006.
