Discriminated against in the USSR, not having been allowed to compete in the Olympics by Soviet authorities because they were Jewish, the family moved to California just a few months after Anton's birth.

Other roles quickly followed, including guest appearances on hit TV series such as ER, Judging Amy, The Practice and Curb Your Enthusiasm, as well as parts in major motion pictures, including his breakthrough role in Hearts of Atlantis (2001), co-starring opposite Anthony Hopkins, for which he won a Young Artist Award.

In 2004 Yelchin became a regular on the TV series Huff, as the son of the title character (played by Hank Azaria). With his weekly appearance on television came more roles in motion pictures. He was directed by David Duchovny in House of D (2004), played Diane Lane's son in Fierce People (2005) and played the pivotal role of a kidnapped teen in Alpha Dog (2007) opposite Justin Timberlake. Yelchin portrayed the title role in the teen comedy Charlie Bartlett (2007) before landing parts in two huge motion pictures: Star Trek (2009) and Terminator Salvation (2009). He went on to land roles in several other films, like Like Crazy (2011) and Fright Night (2011). He also lended his voice for the character of Clumsy in The Smurfs (2011) and The Albino Pirate in The Pirates! Band of Misfits (2012).

In his spare time, Yelchin enjoys playing guitar. He lives in Burbank, California and enrolled at the University of Southern California in 2007 to study film.
