Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Ryder travelled to Toronto to work on her drama
degree at the University of Toronto. Following her university training, she

Forever Knight. The part led her to a regular gig on the show playing
Detective Tracy Vetter. After a three-year stint with Knight, she landed a
role in the Canadian award winning, mini series The Newsroom. The late '90s
was laced with major roles in feature films such as Stolen Heart (1998) and
Blackheart (1998) (both 1998).
Ryder first received nationwide recognition in Gene Roddenberry's sci-fi
series Andromeda playing the first officer Beka Valentine. She took
advantage of the exposure and landed a lead role in the horror film, Jason X (2002).
