"Because I did the Bond film, I get offered a lot of tough-chick-with-big-gun
roles." - Carey Lowell
The daughter of an important North American geologist, Lowell was born in
New York but lived all over the world in such spots as Libya, Holland,
Virginia, and Texas. She attended the University of Colorado at Boulder for
her freshman year and then moved to New York City to start a career in
modeling. This career saw her working with such companies as Ralph Lauren
or Calvin Klein, and appearing on the covers of some the most important
fashion magazines.
While in New York, she studied literature at New York University and began
to study acting. After working at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York,
she made her screen debut in '86's Dangerously Close, but wouldn't reach
stardom until she played the tough, confrontational CIA agent in the James
Bond thriller License To Kill (1989). Since then Lowell has not had another
role that has given her such exposure, though she had a number of other
notable appearances in such films as The Guardian (1990), Sleepless in
Seattle (1993), Leaving Las Vegas (1995), and Fierce Creatures (1997).
She took the lead roll of Dottie Hinson in the short-lived series A League
of Their Own before replacing Canadian actress Jill Hennessy on the long
running series Law & Order, playing assistant district attorney Jamie Ross
in 1996. After two years on the show, she got out of her three-year
contract and left the show to spend more time with her daughter.
Lowell has been married once to actor/director/producer James Lowell who
fathered her daughter Hannah and divorced in 1995. In 2000 she gave birth
to her second child, a son Homer James Jigme Gere, with current boyfriend
actor Richard Gere.
