HAROLD BECKER

A one-time commercial director who moved into documentary making, Harold Becker is known for bringing a gritty realism and earthy humanity to his work.
His 1972 feature film debut, The Ragman's Daughter, was overlooked by audiences, but not by critics. Shot in England, it received scant release in North America. It was another seven years before Becker got behind the camera again, this time shooting an adaptation of Joseph Wambaugh's The Onion Field. That film cemented his reputation as one of Hollywood's finest directors.
While not prolific, the quality of Becker's work is consistently high. His assured understanding of human behaviour is evident in films ranging from the sexual intensity of Sea of Love and the political intrigue of City Hall (both starring Al Pacino).
His next movie, Domestic Disturbance, is scheduled for 2001 release.
