IAIN GLEN
Date of Birth: June 24, 1961
This Edinburgh, Scotland native was educated at the Edinburgh Academy and University of Aberdeen.
He continued to work on his acting skills while attending the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in
London, England.
Following his graduation, where he won the Bancroft medal, he appeared on stage performing in
such plays as Macbeth, and Henry V.
In 1988, Glen landed his first screen role, as Carl Galton in the television series The Fear.
From the experience he gathered here, he crossed over into feature work completing various
projects including Gorillas in the Mist (1988), Rosencratz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1990)
playing Hamlet, and Silent Scream (1990) for which he won a Silver Berlin Bear for Best Acting
Performance from the Berlin International Film Festival.
For the next ten years most of his talent was confined to the small screen. Telefilms and
mini-series made up most of his resume. Landing starring roles in Adam Bede, Frankie's
House and Black and Blue (all telefilms), as well as in the mini-series, Painted Lady
and Glasgow Kiss, Glen became known to British viewers while remaining oblivious to
American audiences.
In 1998 he returned to stage to star opposite Nicole Kidman in The Blue Room, which opened to
rave reviews. Three years later he found himself back on the big screen in the eyes of viewers
on both sides of the pond with performances in Beautiful Creatures (2001) and video-game-
turned-movie Tomb Raider (2001) playing Angelina Jolie's arch villain, Powell. Returning to stage, he was nominated for an Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Play for The Crucible in 2007. In 2008 he starred in Scenes From a Marriage directed by Trevor Nunn at the Belgrade Theatre and in 2009 he played the title role in the world premiere of the play Wallenstein at the Chichester Festival.
Glen married British actress Susannah Harker (who played Jane Bennet in the mini-series Pride and Predjudice) in 1993. They have a son, Finlay, but in 2004 they divorced. He also has a daughter born in 2007 with his girlfriend, actress Charlotte Emmerson.
