Scott Smith Biography

SCOTT SMITH

Scott Smith holds degrees in both Fine Arts (Film) and Business Administration (Marketing) from British Columbia’s Simon Fraser University. In 1995 his fourth year award-winning thesis short film Building Fences earned him an invite to attend Norman Jewison’s Canadian Film Centre as a Director Resident. While there, he wrote and directed his second short film Sshhh. Shown at several international festivals, it won the prize for Best Short Film at the Karlovy Vary Festival in Czechoslovakia and in 1997, Sshhh was nominated for a Genie Award for Best Live Action Short.

Smith then wrote, directed and produced his first feature film, Rollercoaster (1999), which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before going on to screen at over 35 film festivals worldwide. It won several awards, including the Best Drama Film award at the Canyonlands Film Festival, Best Narrative Feature at the SXSW Film Festival and Most Popular Canadian Film at the Vancouver International Film Festival. Determined to have his film released theatrically, Smith put his marketing degree to work and took charge of the distribution himself. In 2000/2001 Rollercoaster was released to theaters in both Canada and the United States. Scott went on to direct the pilot episode of CTV’s drama series The Associates as well as episodes of Cold Squad, Madison, These Arms of Mine, Daring & Grace: Teen Detectives, The Chris Isaak Show and Tom Stone.

Based on a novel by Barbara Gowdy, Scott’s second feature film, Falling Angels (2003), stars Miranda Richardson and Callum Keith Rennie.
