Vondie Curtis-Hall Biography

VONDIE CURTIS-HALL

Date of Birth: September 30, 1956

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Curtis-Hall trained at Juilliard and London's Richmond College. After completing his education, he began performing on stage in such musicals and plays as Dreamgirls, It's So Nice To Be Civilized, The War Party and Williams & Walker, for which he won the 1987 Audelco Award for Best Actor.

By the late '80s, Curtis-Hall was landing roles in both television and film. Beginning with small parts in films like Coming to America and Die Hard 2, he finally began to get noticed with his performance in 1992's Passion Fish as Sugar LeDoux, romancing Alfre Woodard's character. More big roles followed, including supporting parts in Sugar Hill, Crooklyn, Broken Arrow and Romeo + Juliet.

In 1997 he decided to add a different talent to his resume and directed a script he had written called Gridlock'd. The story of two out of control poets who on New Year's Day decide to enter drug "rehab" was a solid debut for Curtis-Hall, who also played a part in the film. It would be a few years before he tried his luck behind camera again, though. The dry spell ended in 2001 with the release of singer Mariah Carey's starring debut film, Glitter.

His television credits include a recurring role on the critically-acclaimed series I'll Fly Away, South Central and the acclaimed drama Fallen Angels, with Gary Oldman. Although Curtis-Hall plays a doctor on Chicago Hope, ironically, he garnered an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of a suicidal transsexual on a rival ensemble drama, ER.

Curtis-Hall is married to writer/director Kasi Lemmons of Eve's Bayou fame.
