I just saw Downfall. I could not take my eyes off the screen. My stomach was in a knot. The girl Traudl says she feels as though she is in a dream and cannot wake up. Things seem surreal. The surreal part is the people doing their every day thing--eating, going about their work--while Hitler vacsillates between mad hope of fantasy troops to save him with lucid moments that depict acceptance of the reality that the end is near, controlling his end by suicide and a promise from a follower to assure that his mortal ends will never be found by anyone especially the Russians.
