Excellent movie which was well done. true to what I think life was like for the soldiers and which left me emotionally drained. Only the second movie I have seen where the audience applauded at the end, and then sat through almost all the credits.

amazing, sickening, passionate, exhilhirating, hurtful, triumphant, heartache, resolute, reflectful, is just a taste of the rollercoaster ride you will have with this film. Paul Gross has raised the bar to incredible heights for canadian films.

Excellent movie most enjoyable

I wanted to like Passchendaele, and some parts were truly excellent. Other parts were not so good. The cinematography was spectacular, the artillary scenes are absolutely terrifying and re-define shell shock for modern audiences. And the overall story is very good. However, the dialog is uninspiring, the love story part is poorly done and takes up far too much time. And worst of all, the Jesus-carrying-the-cross symbolism at the end was so hackneyed, so improbable, so irrelevant to the story, and so cheesy that it nearly ruins the rest of the film all by itself.

I was overwhelmed by the movie. The effort that Paul Gross put into this movie is nothing short of extrodinary and it made me proud to be a Canadian!!!

Excellant movie. The freedom that we enjoy today came with a huge price. Salute to all those veterans and soldiers who died/fought for us in WW1&2 so that we can enjoy the freedom of today. We have to fight for what we believe even at the cost of our lifes. Love does not mean SEX but with a promise and committment. Paul kept his promise of saving her brother and sacrified his life for it. The rule is "Don't die". Love=Sacrifice=Commitment to love till death do us apart. We should be proud to be a Canadian. "Very well done and Superbly made Film. Well Done Paul Gross

Excellant Movie. The Romance fit all the girls and the cruelty of wars were fully expressed in the film. The ultimate price of keeping his promise to save her rebellious brother is to sacrify his life. He came back to the war because of Love: what a marvellous word

Masterful. This film is at least 3 stars ahead of anything Hollywood has done in the last year.

Great Canadian movie about Canadians at war. Maybe it will help so many so called Canadians wake up and relize that Freedom isn't free and show support for our troops who have and are doing their duty for this GREAT Country, Canada

Such a poorly done movie dont waste ur money on it. The horrible love story over powers what this movie should really be about.. The soliders in the trenches and how horrible it was to be there and how the Canadians over came everything that was thrown at them . The movie should not even be called Passchendaele since the one part that is really about the war is in the last 10 min of the movie. Bad movie and does no justice for our men who fought and died over there for us. God bless our soliders.

every school kid in Canada should see this movie. A compulsory item for social studies class.

Enjoyable! Worthwhile flick.

This is love story not a docu-drama nor is it a movie about a battle. It is a movie about his grandfather with a history lesson written at the end of the movie. Paul Gross, who did everything (acting, writing, directing and sponsoring the movie), is in the nearly every scene ... go figure! Over all the movie was a good first try. It was a bit of a tear jerker. The movie does needs more material to make it more interesting for the historical perspective or be a very short love story. The movie should be called, "A story about a guy would fought in a famous Canadian WW1 battle." Paul Gross showed the fallacy and opinions of any war, but lost me with the love story part. I really didn't see eit

This is a movie to make every Canadian proud, if not even teary-eyed. Paul Gross presents a moving love story, while at the same time displaying an event that heralded Canada's coming of age as a nation. Every Canadian should see it, if for no other reason than to gain some appreciation of themselves and of Canada's strength. No,it's not "Saving Private Ryan", nor is it intended to be. PASSCHENDAELE contains historical fact, blended into a love story. It's a tale that should make every Canadian proud...and it IS 100% Canadian. What's wrong with that? Thank you, Paul Gross, for the best movie I've seen in years and certainly the best ever originated by and produced in Canada.

Passchendaele is a classic moving tell of a nice love story and the tragic events of WW1. Superbly made, well casted that leaves quite a impact in your mind for days after watching the movie. A vey nice treat for movie watchers after a long time. This film desreves atleast 6 oscars including best director, best producer, best actor, best screen play, and Catherine's role/acting would very likely support best actress award for her if not, she deserves atleast suporting actress award in my opinion. It could grab 6th award for excellent photography as well. We loved the movie and talked about it for 3 -4 days after watching. I never gave any reviews before, this is my first time and do not

This was a great movie. Although, I was expecting more from Passchendaele than there was, I still learned a little about WW1 and our part in it. It is mostly a love story and the emotional/mental struggles of a soldier, but the war scenes were enough. I have just finished the book, fantastic. Overall it is a great movie but if you are looking for nothing but war, ........better look somewhere else.

I loved this movie. It was amazing and it deserves a hand. It is the first Canadian movie I have seen in theatres!

This movie had so much potential, but fell short. The poor shaping of the script and unfocused plot lines resulted in a mess as muddy as the battle field. I love Paul Gross, but he should have let someone else play the lead. Good concept, poor execution.

Love story or not, it is about time a movie director in Canada showcased one of our finest moments in history. Canadians should be proud about our war history. Instead of showcasing our failures, as shown on the CBC with movies like Dieppe, it is about time we had a movie about our success. And speaking about bravado as one person said was unrealistic, as a former member of the military, that bravado is there and lends confidence to your buddies who are in combat and in stressful situations. Bravo Paul Gross

Great Movie; the action scenes in Saving Private Ryan, had nothing over this flick.

User review rating: 0 October 25, 2008

I am really confused as to where the high ratings are coming from. They must be people who work for the company that made the movie because this is ONE HORRIBLE MOVIE. Don't go!!!

User review rating: 0 October 25, 2008

The Alberta scenery was breathtaking, but the movie was silly and the script was historically weak. The Conscription Crisis of 1917 was never mentioned despite the Recruiting Office scenario. It borrowed the sappy plotlines of "Titanic" and “Pearl Harbor”, and had small-scale, short-lived action scenes. The consummation of love, against a backdrop of symbolic artillery fire, set a new low. The acting was sub-par, although the dastardly British Officer at least provided comic relief. It was evident that Paul Gross has never spent a day in the actual military. Watch the History Channel instead.

Too bad this riveting account of history and human endurance was was told in the context of a contrived love story. The audience remained seated until all the credits had rolled. Even with the abysmal acting of the David Mann character and some really corny scenes, the movie is worth seeing since it powerfully makes the point that war is stupid

Absolutely moving story!!! A must see on the big screen!!!

Anne of Green Gables meets the Great War. Not grown up enough for adults, but too graphic for children. This movie is not suitable for children or young teens. Wait until it is on DVD and rent it. It`s not worth the price of a movie ticket.

What are you people talking about? This was a great movie. Probably the best war film I have seen. The story is wonderful as well. It is a must see Canadian Film

A lovely story about people in a time of war with a lot to say about why we go to war and war's ultimate cost. Congratulations to Paul Gross...hard to believe this is only the second film he's directed. I look forward to more from him.

A disappointing movie. Disjointed and poorly acted (especially at the beginning). The hero's cavalier and jovial attitude during the opening firefight was totally unrealistic. This movie had potential...great potential, but weak performances and questionable directing reduced it to mediocrity. I keep looking at my watch! Another 'Saving Private Ryan'...in my dreams. R.A.N.

A movie that had so much potential. A movie that is based on a topic that is so important to Canadian history. Unfortunately, it was ruined and dominated by a sappy love story. What a shame!

User review rating: 0 October 23, 2008

This movie was an honest representation of Canadians in a time of great turmoil. Although the the love story was fictional, the war was all too real & it was well portrayed in the film. The war scenes looked like they were taken right out of WWI footage. Unfortunately, the demonstration on bigotry in some parts of the film were also very honest. I have a great deal of respect for this movie, not just because of the respect it pays to the sacrifices made by our ancestors, but also for it's honesty in reminding us that our "goodness" as Canadians that we are so proud of, can collapse to the ground if we take it for granted. It was a fabulous movie & in the years to come I will surely trea

great movie!

User review rating: 0 October 23, 2008

Generally, very well done for a home-grown flick. In my opinion, not enough of the movie was devoted to the title subject-that is the battle. Story too focused on a love story and home-front aspect of WW1.

User review rating: 0 October 23, 2008

This was an absolutely BRUTAL movie. The acting left much to be desired and the chemistry between actors was nonexistant. There isn't a bit of history in this film. Individuals who know nothing of the battle at Passchendaele will walk away with no additional insight. It's a forced love story that fell far from the mark. I have never heard so many females laughing out loud at a sex scene in my life. Save your money!

User review rating: 0 October 22, 2008

I've read the reviews ... most seemed positive, but had to see the movie for myself. Well acted, excellent cinematography, battle scenes were realistic, with a love story to boot ... all from an impassioned Canadian who just had to make the film he felt compelled to make ... What more could you ask for. Well done Paul Gross! You did us proud! Added touch of movie clips from the period at the end credits showed both Canadian and German troops, which added credibility to the film you had just witnessed. Overall 5 out of 5 stars.

Wonderful cast and acting. Paul Gross outdid himself with the making of this movie.

I had been anticipating this film for a long time. As a history teacher, I was thrilled to know that a Canadian production of an important battle of W.W.I was soon to be released. I was disappointed to find a love story with little focus on the battle. I loathed the scene where the Germans stop firing to permit Dunne to carry his lover's brother to safety, a pathetic reanactment of Christ carrying the cross. The amorous relationship was greatly exaggerated. The film had been a great idea but it suffered the same Hollywood treatment that devalued Affleck's Pearl Harbor. Paul Gross should have stuck to the subject matter suggested by the title.

User review rating: 0 October 22, 2008

I would have prefered more of an emphasis on the battle with less of a love story. I also had a problem with the time lines - he was at Vimy, he was wounded, sent home and recovered, and then joined up again and still made it to Passchendaele. This is hard to believe. The depiction of the conditions at Passchendaele were very good, but I just wish they had spent more time on developing a better story line and better charactors.

This movie could've been a benchmark in Canadian film. It had all the right elements such as topic and historical significance. This movie stunk. The script was terrible, the acting wooden, and one cliche after the other. It had little to do with the battle and a lot to do with a lame romance. I wanted to like this film but instead I walked out feeling humiliated for Paul Gross. What was he thinking? There isn't even enough space here to start!

10 people in theater on a Tuesday night. Terrible movie but makes one proud of what our forces did!

User review rating: 0 October 22, 2008

Disappointing, more of a made for TV storyline and acting .A great idea , never developed. One thing the film does is make one aware of the horrors that Canadian soldiers endured. i didn't know that the Canadian military was the the only one that could maintain the line at Vimy Ridge.

This is an excellent movie and I will be going again. Well done Paul Gross, I really hope this film receives the recognition it deserves. I loved the story and the way it was presented. Every Canadian should see this film.

User review rating: 0 October 22, 2008

I can't remember being so moved at the end of a film as I was at this one. It is truly a remarkable film -- two stories in one film actually. It starts out on the battle field and then moves to the home front, then back to the battlefield, to show the hell that was Passchendaele. An amazing accomplishment by actor, writer, director, producer Paul Gross. A must see. Noble

This is the very best movie that I have ever seen in a theatre in a very long time! It's well worth the price of admission for every Canadian (or otherwise)to view this film. When I viewed this movie on Saturday, I noticed that people in the audience were openly crying about the contents of this film. It was my observation that nobody in the theatre left their seats until the credits, music and haunting images from WWI were finished. That tells me that Paul Gross and his cast did a fantastic job in creating this epic movie! As a matter of fact, I was so moved by Passchendaele that I returned to the cinema on the same day in the evening for a second viewing. When Passchendaele becomes availab

this movie is absolutely amazing. the scenes are fascinatingly real, and the actors do a great job. not only it makes you understand about what it was for people in times of war, but the romance part of it makes you think of things in a completely different perspective. i personally adored this movie. and paul gross is incredible. he's a phenomenon.

User review rating: 0 October 21, 2008

While the movie fails to attempt the balance between action and romance that Last of the Moheicans mastered, it remains a very good show. A couple of flashback moments inserted into the drama would have made the middle act of the movie more tolerable, and would have sated the demands of the action oriented viewers.

User review rating: 0 October 21, 2008

It was amazing. I couldn't stop crying. Everybody was looking at me in a weird way...
