overall a very good movie for the whole family. i especially enjoyed viola davis' performance as the teacher who helps turn around the school together with a determined parent.

User review rating: 4 September 16, 2012

true story, good acting by all the actors nice to see the parents standing up for their childrens needs.

saw this on a double-bill with expendables 2 at the drive-in; what a letdown! you'd think with a title like "won't back down" you could expect lots of action, but there was little if any at all.

User review rating: 4 September 15, 2012

although the acting was great and the theme was timely and relevant, i see this more as a tv movie (or movie-of-the-week) than a theatrical film, in its style and delivery. all of the labour negotiations and such would prove too boring to make it a movie for the whole family and the lack of true drama or tragedy stop it from being a provocative film. but it's always a pleasure to see these two actresses on the screen and fighting for a good cause at that.

the storyline is very good, a very good movie for parents or grandparents with child in schooling year.

User review rating: 4 September 15, 2012

like the story and pretty emotional at certain scene. overall a must see movie for family with young children.

User review rating: 4 September 15, 2012

i think the story base is very good; it enlighten the public about failing school system in north america in general.

User review rating: 4 September 15, 2012

stellar cast does a great job portraying the real life story of empowered parents and teachers who take education into their own hands. aside from a few cheesy hollywood movie moments, it was well done and told a relevant story. recommended!

User review rating: 4 September 15, 2012

a worthwhile movie--based on true events with superb acting from the two main leads highly recommended

User review rating: 4 September 15, 2012

i thoroughly enjoyed this movie. it had a great story line. viola davis & maggie g were excellent in their rolls. a very touching movie that will inspire a lot of us. i like happy endings.

User review rating: 4 September 14, 2012

a great story about a determined young mom who tries to improve her daughter's school. fantastic acting from all the leads -- especially maggie gylenhall and viola davis.

User review rating: 4 September 14, 2012

i loved this movie so much i've already told all my friends about it,the cinema was so quiet you could have heard any pin dropped that's how much attention the people were paying,4 stars is because i;ve really enjoyed it,a very interesting movie.

User review rating: 4 September 14, 2012

despite not being a mom i was moved by all the ladies' stellar performances. i hardly recognized holly hunter, i like her old look better.

User review rating: 4 September 14, 2012

a strong cast. a great story. maggie gyllenhaal reminded me of julia roberts in erin brockovich, a fierce character that "won't back down". viola davis shares the screen with gyllenhaal and provides a great, gut wrenching at times, performance. refreshing to see a film with no nudity or language that can appeal to older audiences as well.

i truly enjoyed this movie and even had a tear in my eye, at one point. i feel this movie hits home to many low/medium-income families to motivate them to go one extra step or to go beyond what the rules tell us. i love that the movie did not seem like a high-budget film. great film!

a very inspiring script but the acting could have been better...

it was a great movie, that really stand out. i hope that this movie win some academy award for "best film" and "actors", it a feel good movie that anyone can enjoy.

my duagher and i both enjoyed this movie. it was a great storyline and a feel good movie. the acting was very well done too.

User review rating: 4 September 14, 2012

very inspiring, love maggie gyllenhaal! she really played the part amazingly well!

User review rating: 4 September 14, 2012

actors were all very talented (including the little girl), strory was unique, no boring moment through the screening eventhough it was a long story. had a great viewing all by my lonesome. thanks!

User review rating: 4 September 14, 2012

beautiful story. great characters that are convincing. a must see.

User review rating: 5 September 14, 2012

excellent acting, realistic actors, great theme and morals!

User review rating: 4 September 14, 2012

my wife just loved it. she was entertained and it kept her attention - she was in the story, wanting the school to turn around. for my part, i am more rationnal "i think too much" ;) so i was concerned about the realisticness of the whole thing, the lack of discussion of the view from the kids'perspective. i may have been too much of a nerd to enjoy the movie fully, but even so, i think that it was a wothwhile movie to watch and i had a good time.

User review rating: 3 September 14, 2012

great story ! maggie got the character in her blood.

User review rating: 4 September 14, 2012

it's ok

User review rating: 4 September 14, 2012

movie to see by any parent with kids in school. it shows how one must fight to improve one mind at a time. wonderfull acting by davis, gillenhaal and hunter

User review rating: 5 September 14, 2012

nice story, and the actors were really great in their performance !

User review rating: 4 September 14, 2012

really enjoyable ,good story, important topic though i found the reasonings behind previous lack of action by school boards to be totally incomprehensible-- children should always be the main reasoning and if the system is failing them then the school boards, the unions and everyone else should be trying to make changes not blocking changes.

User review rating: 4 September 14, 2012

a very inspirational story that is worth seeing.

User review rating: 4 September 14, 2012

great movie, great story with actors that deliver a good acting! but it was not the movie of my life, so i rate 4 stars. thank you

User review rating: 4 September 14, 2012

very moving! maggie gyllenhaal could tone down her dramatic act a bit though.

User review rating: 4 September 14, 2012

the setting and story was very convincing. the main characters' ordeals were very well depicted and made it very easy to identify with them. i liked that the main characters' huge effort and sacrifice against all odds were eventually fruitiful, helped by some other characters towards the happy and rightful ending. it is a feel good movie realistically depicting that hopes in a oppressive circumstance can overcome some obstacle with right process and right help.

User review rating: 3 September 14, 2012

first of all this was a true movie with similar ideas in toronto schools, so i feel that it gave us the teachers and students some of the answers that we require to fix our schools as well. the acting was excellent with maggie and viola and of course holly hunter giving superb performances.

User review rating: 4 September 14, 2012

wonderful movie. maggie gyllenhaal and viola davis are outstanding. they are two mothers who are very concerned about their children's progress in a very poor school and try to improve conditions. they are fought by the pta and officials but are determined to form a well run charter school for their children. the us school system continues to amaze me - there are so many poor schools and parents seem to have so little say in their child's placement. a must see! as a retired teacher, i was spellbound.

User review rating: 4 September 14, 2012

i enjoyed the movie, it was good to see that not always the unions win, both maggie and viola were great actors. very heartfelt between viola and her son.

User review rating: 0 September 14, 2012

just not compelling; subject matter such as this is better suited to a tv movie-of-the-week.

User review rating: 4 September 14, 2012

insprational and moving.... absolutely worth going to see this film! the performances by maggie gyllenhaal and viola davais were both spectacular and very believable. viola davis should get a supporting actress nod for her role as the reluctant teacher!

User review rating: 0 September 14, 2012

another stand out performance by viola davis in this inspiring movie based on a true story. it's a tutorial about passion. reignite yours. teachers, parents & "politicians" should see this movie (with their kids, if possible).

User review rating: 4 September 14, 2012

better than i expected, but it was a bit predictable at times. definately worth watching.
