Fox Searchlight picks up Steve McQueen’s Shame

Fox Searchlight picks up Steve McQueen's ShameFox Searchlight announced on Friday that they’ve officially acquired Steve McQueen’s film, Shame, and will be releasing it in North America sometime in 2011. The film, starring Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan, received huge praise when it played at the Venice and Telluride film festivals earlier this month, with the Italian fest honouring Fassbender the title of best actor.

Shame is the provocative story of a New York man (Fassbender) who struggles with his own sexual compulsions while trying to save his sister (Mulligan) from her self-destructive behaviour. In a statement released by Fox Searchlight, co-presidents Nancy Utley and Stephen Gilula called the film extradordinary, one that “probes some of the deepest and darkest issues ever portrayed on screen with amazingly gifted performances by Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan.”

Now with a 2011 US release date, there's a good chance Shame will be in the running for an Oscar or two. We’ll just have to wait and see!
