Jacob (Asa Butterfield) meets a girl with heavy, weighted shoes. She holds a squirrel in her hand and ties a rope around her waist, then asks Jacob to hang on to her. She unclasps the shoes and floats up to the squirrel's nest and deposits him there. Jacob can't believe his eyes. As they approach the mansion where the girl lives with a number of other children, a woman named Miss Peregrine (Eva Green) greets them at the door, telling Jacob he's right on time. He meets an assortment of peculiar children who have different, but strange, gifts. Miss Peregrine explains to him how they came to be that way. As a Nazi bomb is about to drop on the home and the children, Miss Peregrine tells Jacob they live in a time loop, which keeps them safe. She tells Jacob he's one of them, even though he insists he's ordinary. He learns he was born to protect them from evil beings hunting the children for their powers.
