he's fiercely intelligent and has no qualms about filming sex scenes for the big screen, but hates the term "Bond Girl." French actress Eva Green has made a living from movies in her native country but is about to become a star.
The 25-year-old was chosen over dozens of starlets as the woman to reinvent the ailing Bond franchise playing Vesper Lynd -- Bond's first love and the woman he wanted to marry -- in Casino Royale.
The sexy Green's previous roles include playing Orlando Bloom's love interest in Kingdom of Heaven and notoriously shedding her clothes for French-language film The Dreamers. Unlike many A-listers, Green has always fiercely defended her nudity in the film, frustrated at the controversy it caused.
"I know some people in America were uptight and shocked when they saw the nude scenes, but it's about love -- it's not about sex," she said in a recent interview. "It must be very shocking for the American people, but what I don't understand is why they are so crazy about that."
It's unlikely that Green (pronounced 'grain') will repeat those scenes for Casino Royale, because Bond bosses tend to keep a limit on flesh shots, to appeal to a family audience.
But what she is likely to bring to the movie is a feistiness, independence and smoky-eyed beauty. After all, in the novel Lynd is the woman who broke Bond's heart as a young man and is responsible for his subsequent casual attitude towards women. Angelina Jolie and Thandie Newton were originally tapped for the role, but Green's casting is likely to give Lynd more of an edge than previous Bond babes.
She is already worried about typecasting and takes umbrage at being referred to as "a Bond girl" saying: "It sounds like a bimbo or something."
Green is not the only Bond girl who will leave fans shaken and stirred -- producers have opted for three femme fatales this time around.
Stunning Italian actress Caterina Murino, who, like Green, is a star in her native country, will join her, as will blonde Bosnian beauty Ivana Milicevic who plays Valenka, a charmer who threatens to bring Bond down in the film.
Green says she has mixed feelings about becoming famous, which is a certainty when Casino Royale is released.
"I just prefer to focus on my work and I hope I won't be too exposed," she says. "Otherwise, it would be extremely hard to have a private life. But fame is not my aim-it is just so superficial. And I'm not famous yet."
