adonna and controversy just seem to go hand in hand. So it's no wonder her recent adoption of a young Malawian boy has raised the ire of some.
On October 4, Madonna traveled to Malawi with her husband, Guy Ritchie, where they spent eight days visiting orphanages she is funding through her Raising Malawi charity.
While there, she arranged to adopt David Banda, 1, who arrived in London in late October.   Madonna, 48, has said she acted according to the law, but the toddler's father, Yohane Banda, said he didn't realize he was signing away custody of his motherless son "for good" and believed his son would return home to his village when he grows up.
Appearing on Oprah via satellite from her London home, Madonna accused the media of putting words into Banda's mouth.
"I sat in that room. I looked into the man's eyes," she recalled. "I believe that the press is manipulating this information out of him."
Madonna and Ritchie have been granted an interim adoption order by Malawi officials and expect approval in 18 months. However, the activist group Human Rights Consultative Committee has appealed against the adoption, saying Madonna had broken Malawi laws that forbid international adoption.
According to Madonna, David is happily settled in her home with her two children-daughter Lourdes, 10, and son Rocco, 6. She also revealed she would be returning to Malawi with David once or twice a year so the boy could see his biological father, and Banda is in turn free to visit David whenever he wants.
