Towards the end of the 1950s, the majority of Quebec filmmakers worked in alliance with the National Film Board. But René Bail was one of the rare filmmakers to produce his films independently.

His avant-garde films impressed and influenced Claude Jutra and his fellow-members of the NFB. Following a serious car accident in 1972, Bail was left disfigured and seemingly condemned to obscurity until his death in October 2007.
