The year is 1613, and William Shakespeare (Kenneth Branagh) has been acknowledged as the greatest writer of the age.

But disaster strikes when his renowned Globe Theatre burns to the ground. Devastated, Shakespeare returns to Stratford, where he must face a troubled past and a neglected family. Haunted by the death of his only son Hamnet, he struggles to mend the broken relationships with his wife and daughters. In doing so, he is ruthlessly forced to examine his own failings as husband and father.

His very personal search for the truth uncovers secrets and lies within a family at war.

  • 2 stars "Very slow paced. Not Branagh's best work!"
  • 5 stars "Loved this film. I haven't enjoyed Shakespeare this much since seeing Prospero's Books on screen in the early 90's. The acting is fantastic and I learned a great deal about Shakespeare's two daughters and about his 11 year old son Hamlet Shakespeare that held his heart closer than any other human being. Wish we could get more of this sort of thing on screen rather than films like Late Night."
  • 5 stars "Quality film based on mostly fact. Great acting though out"
